**Andrew King: Changing carbon budgets accounting for post net-zero climate changes**  
The Paris Agreement includes the aim to keep global warming well below 2°C and preferably below 1.5°C in recognition of worsening climate impacts as the world warms. Associated with that aim, budgets have been calculated for the remaining carbon that can be emitted. However, these carbon budgets are largely derived and motivated by the projected impacts of climate change in a rapidly warming world. Here, we use seven 1000-year long ACCESS-ESM-1.5 net-zero emissions simulations to study the changes in local and global climate impacts within carbon budgets for 1.5°C, 2°C and higher levels of global warming. We argue that post net-zero changes in the climate system necessitate a re-framing of carbon budgets and that this is particularly important given the uneven impacts of long-term committed climate changes. As we look to CMIP7 and the next IPCC report, we hope that this new perspective proves useful.
