Hi COSIMA,
Only 4 sleeps to go until the COSIMA Workshop and Hackathon in Melbourne!! Here is a summary of everything you need to know:
- **Monday - Hackathon** **at 10am** (coffee from 9am). [Schedule is here](https://forum.access-hive.org.au/t/cosima-2-day-hackathon-v5-0-monday-sep-8-tuesday-sep-9-2025/4794). - **Monday - Annual COSIMA Bocce Tournament at 3:45pm** at Carlton Gardens. Snacks and non-alcoholic refreshments provided. BYO drinks (there is a shop on the walk there). 🏆 🍻
- **Tuesday - Hackathon starts at 9am**. There is also [ACCESS-NRI training](https://www.access-nri.org.au/access-community-workshop-2025/training-day-program/) you may want to check out. You will be able to swap between hacking and training during the day as you like.
- **Wednesday and Thursday: ACCESS Workshop**. [Schedule is here](https://www.access-nri.org.au/access-community-workshop-2025/main-workshop-program/), with lots of COSIMA talks and posters.
- **Thursday 5:50pm: COSIMA Dinner Cruise at Federation Wharf.** If you are not signed up, but want to come, talk to Adele or Taimoor.

**NCMAS 2026 Call for Applications** will open next month and a closing date of 31 October 2025 has [now been announced](https://my.nci.org.au/mancini/ncmas/2026/).
We’re interested in knowing what models people in the community would like to include in their applications. This allows us (ACCESS-NRI Ocean and Software transformation teams) to plan and complete the appropriate benchmarking.
If this is relevant to you, [please complete forum poll](https://forum.access-hive.org.au/t/models-needing-performance-benchmarks-for-the-upcoming-2026-ncmas-applications/5244) **by 29/09**.

Hi COSIMA,
This is for people waiting on performance data for NCMAS bids.
Resource usage estimates for the COSIMA community have been profiled by ACCESS-NRI, scaling data is already available [here](https://forum.access-hive.org.au/t/access-nri-model-scaling-repository-a-collection-of-parallel-scalability-studies/5426). Given the Friday deadline, we will be releasing usage resource numbers as they become available.
Currently, we have the global OM3 25km but the 4km pan-Antarctic configuration usage estimates will be available shortly.

The ocean circulation varies across a range of temporal and spatial scales, and modelling and observing the relevant scales is key to effective ocean prediction and understanding the ocean’s role in global climate. By combining ocean models and observations through data assimilation, we can better understand and predict oceanic processes. Conventional satellite altimeter measurements of sea surface height have constrained mesoscale-eddy permitting models. However, accurate model estimates of submesoscale (\<50km) flows remain a challenge due to rapidly evolving flow and lack of observations at suitable scales. The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission provides the first-ever synchronous 2D maps of SSH at ~2km resolution, albeit at low temporal resolution (21-day repeat cycle). Here we use advanced data-assimilation in a submesoscale-permitting model of the East Australian Current and reveal the positive impact of SWOT observations on both mesoscale and submesoscale circulation estimates. We demonstrate a key distinction between the impact of assimilating fine-scale SWOT observations on model representation and prediction of ocean processes across scales. Assimilating SWOT data improves representation and prediction of the larger-scale mesoscale motions, and improves representation (but not prediction) of the fine-scale dynamics. Increased relative vorticity variance with SWOT assimilation is widespread in space and time (away from SWOT observations) and projected to depth. By improving how we represent and forecast ocean processes, we lay the foundation for better climate projections and more accurate ocean forecasts.

Hi COSIMA,
**We’re looking for a new Co-Chair to join the COSIMA leadership team!** The Co-Chairs help build community, provide scientific leadership for shared model configurations and COSIMA Recipes, and act as a link to ACCESS-NRI.
COSIMA currently has four Co-Chairs (Ed Doddridge, Andrew Kiss, Paul Spence and Adele Morrison - one of us will step down to make room for someone new). Each Co-Chair shapes their role around what they enjoy and their expertise. Some of the tasks the leadership team do include organising / chairing weekly Thursday COSIMA meetings, running annual hackathons and workshops, leading model development and evaluation projects, guiding maintenance and direction of the Recipes, supporting inclusion and diversity, managing compute and storage resources, and engaging with the ACCESS-NRI Scientific Advisory Committee.
Of course, COSIMA’s strength comes from the whole community. Many people outside the official leadership team also make incredible contributions and take initiative to support and improve COSIMA, e.g. through contributions to the Recipes, model development and diversity initiatives. This is amazing and we would love everyone to continue contributing to the community!
If you are interested in becoming a Co-Chair, please get in touch with Adele and/or Paul by 28th November. Additional information on how you’d like to contribute to the role is welcomed.
