Atmosphere WG Meeting 04.06.2025 minutes
18 participants on Zoom.
- Brief update for WG co-chairs:
-
Yi Huang (Uni Melb)
- Updates from the Hackathon in Canberra last month- over 250 participants with many international
- Involved exploring high-res modelling data
- 10 projects were proposed and led by ECRs covering a range of topics, e.g. extreme precipitation
- Updates on the flagship experiment from Paul Gregory:
- Based on ACCESS-rAM3
- Details on Cumulus
- 12 km outer domain – same as the BARRA-2 domain
- 5 km domain over Australia and surrounding oceans
- 1 km domain over south-east Australia
- Computing: 15 ksu to run 5 hours
- Adding urban information inside the 1 km domain
- Contact Paul if you want to run any experiments
-
Charmaine Franklin (BoM)
- Preparing for next week’s workshop; some topics will involve data assimilation, machine learning
- Implemented nested suite, LFRic and UM at NCI
- ACCESS-A/AE development updates, LFRic will replace the UM
- Moving to a new data centre
-
Heidi Nettelbeck
- Currently 2 PhD student interns at NRI; Jemma Jeffree working with ACCESS-CM3
- Supported reference datasets update by Clare Richards
-
By mid-2027 overall storage should increase by 2 PB
-
ACCESS-NRI provide merit-based support for data storage and sharing, working with the community
-
Framework and procedures for dataset management being developed
-
Support for both curated and ‘sandboxed’ (short-term/fixed duration) datasets
-
Data request processes being streamlined
-
Flagged: High priority datasets for the community should be communicated to NCI
Discussion
Atmosphere WG data requests- Group 2
- UM nudging based on ERA5 at n96 resolution next priority
- AGCD provided by NCI is a delayed release rather than real-time → comment by Yi that some users may require real-time data
- Group 3 (global radiosonde data- IGRA) requires someone to actively manage this dataset
- Group 4 data requests considered complete with no further actions
- Comment by Charmaine: Suggest training for the community on how to access BoM data
- Group 2
- ACCESS Workshop 2025 (8-12 September) by Heidi Nettelbeck and Paige Martin
- Abstract submissions now open!!! Close on 15th June 2025.
-
Paige on Atmosphere WG meeting Friday 12th September agenda:
- Could do a hands on atmosphere recipe/cookbook session, e.g., how notebooks can be added to Github and reviews
- Note that questions on how the atmosphere cookbooks can be organised by the community, and who reviews or accepts them needs further discussion.
- Suggest a virtual training for Git prior to the workshop
Discussion on WG meeting day agenda (12 Sep)
- Comment by Scott Wales: the Met office has created some git resources which could be used that can be found here
- Comment by Matthew Lipson:
- Could use the opportunity like a mini-hackathon to work on new collaborative projects
- Bec: interested in best practices for git/github session
- Charmaine: science talks
- Please post any other ideas for our WG meeting day on the forum.
-
ACCESS-NRI 2025/6 Workplan by Heidi Nettelbeck
Following areas were discussed:
- Atmosphere model (ACCESS-AM3) beta release
- ACCESS-rAM3
- Coupled model ACCESS-CM3 and ACCESS-ESM3
- Ancillary suites and tools
- Training and Engagement
Discussion
- Comment by Charmaine: future development work at BoM and Met office focusing on LFRic
- Paul: Does NRI have plans to support regional coupling capability, e.g., regional ACCESS-CM3? as W21C have plans to use this next year.
