# PhD Position “Antarctic Sea Ice Variability and Change” (m/f/d)

**Background**
The extent of sea ice in the Antarctic has recently plummeted. However, the underlying causes are unclear, and future developments are uncertain. The goal of this project is to use the latest circum-Antarctic-sea-ice satellite observations, including data on the extent, type, age, drift, and thickness of sea ice, to identify the underlying patterns and causes of these alterations in the Antarctic. Satellite observations are to be complemented by analysis of the main atmospheric and oceanic drivers from the latest reanalyses. Results are to be compared with outputs from state-of-the-art coupled ice–ocean models.

**Tasks**

- Analyse various sea-ice satellite data products
- Analyse the co-variability of sea-ice properties with atmospheric and oceanic forcing
- Compare the results with the outputs of process and climate models

**Requirements**

- Master of Science (MSc) degree in sea ice geophysics, oceanography, climate science, physics, or a related field
- Solid background in atmosphere–ice–ocean interactions
- Experience with large, gridded geographical datasets
- Good programming skills
- Good communication skills in English, both oral and written
