At the request of the Australian Cryosphere community, ACCESS-NRI is developing a “Cryosphere Data Pool” – an efficient and centralised data discovery and access tool hosted on NCI Gadi.
The Cryosphere Data Pool will leverage existing infrastructure provided by the ACCESS-NRI Intake Catalogue. This approach will allow users to access common datasets used within Cryospheric Sciences and ice sheet modelling, as well as other datasets generated by the ACCESS community that may be relevant (e.g. ocean temperature and surface mass balance from ACCESS models).
We need your help!
To ensure that we meet the needs of the Cryosphere community, we are seeking community input on the key datasets to be included in the Cryosphere Data Pool.
We have begun compiling a list of “Community Requested Datasets” here.
This list currently includes a limited set of datasets commonly used for ice sheet model initialisation that are focused geographically on Antarctica. We need your help to populate it further!
What to do
-
Familiarise yourself with the list of Community Requested Datasets here. Columns can be filtered using the in-built filter function.
-
Add entries to the spreadsheet. Each requested dataset should be included as a new row and must include the following fields:
- Category: If your requested dataset does not fit into one of the existing Categories, please add a new category. Existing catergories can be viewed by using the column filter, or manually reviewing the entries in this column.
- Dataset Name: Please list the common dataset name. This information will be used in the Cryosphere Data Pool to identify the dataset.
- File Type: Please indicate the file type(s) associated with the dataset and, if possible, the approximate number of files.
- Variable: Please list the variables included in the dataset.
- Location: Please provide a link to the dataset. If the dataset is not available for public download or already located on NCI Gadi, please note this and we will contact you to obtain a copy of the dataset for inclusion in the Cryosphere Data Pool, if the appropriate licensing and permissions exist.
- Community Contact: Please provide the name and contact information for the community member best-placed to act as a contact for the dataset (i.e. probably you!).
- Priority: Please select a “priority” for this dataset from the drop-down (i.e. “1 - Initial release” or “2 - Subsequent release”). Currently, we are prioritising the latest versions of all Antarctic-focused datasets, with legacy versions and Greenland-focused datasets to be included in subsquent releases.
-
Monitor this Topic for updates on the Cryosphere Data Pool.
-
That’s it! Sit back and wait for Version 0.1 of the Cryosphere Data Pool to be released.
When to do it
To allow ACCESS-NRI to continue developing the Cryosphere Data Pool towards a Version 0.1 release, we are requesting this community input be complete by October 18, 2025.
