Experiment proposal: AMIP-style ACCESS-AM3 5-year spin-up N96 simulation

Experiment title :bell:: AMIP-style ACCESS-AM3 5-year spin-up N96 simulation

Summary :bell:: Cloud feedback remains the leading source of uncertainty in estimating equilibrium climate sensitivity (ECS). Given large ECS in ACCESS-CM3 and UK models employing the latest UM, it is instrumental to investigate cloud responses to evolving environmental conditions in these models. Here we choose to focus on ACCESS-AM3, the atmospheric component of these model, to elucidate the role of clouds in the model responses to radiative forcing. We plan to run AMIP-style simulations from 1979-2025, and this proposal aims to run a spin-up simulation for five years, which enables us to configure and decide upon the desired model output at various vertical levels and temporal frequency. Particularly, we will check potential diagnostics based on COSP1/2.

We expect this proposal to be closely related to the planned high-res ACCESS-AM3 simulation led by 21CW and climate sensitivity studies with CM2/ESM. We welcome comments about potential pathways to tackle the cloud challenges and to work together on these simulations.

Scientific motivation: There are large bias in radiation and clouds in CM2 and ESM1.5. It is important to have a closer examination on individual physical processes using atmospheric only simulations.

Yes for sure - I will be looking to do a similar run next year for the 2015-current period :slight_smile: I will likey nudge the simulation though as we are interested in direct comparison to obs!
