Meeting Minutes 2025: Atmosphere Working Group

Atmosphere WG Meeting 30.04.2025 minutes

19 participants on Zoom

  1. Brief update from WG co-chairs:
  • Charmaine Franklin (BoM);
    ACCESS-A and ACCESS-AE evaluation:

    • ACCESS-A/AE is the new single, nation-wide model being developed at the BoM to replace the current suite of ACCESS-C/CE systems
    • Evaluation of extended trials are running and specific cases is underway

    RAL3-LFRIC with UK Met Office:

    • BoM contributing to the assessment of the version of LFRic with RAL3 physics settings with the UK Met Office

    AI/ML:

  • BoM has a version of the ECMWF Machine Learning model, AIFS (Artificial intelligence Integrated Forecasting System) running for experimentation

  • Matt Woodhouse (CSIRO):

    • Research vessel currently on cruise along West Coast of Tasmania to Cape Grim, and will move south-west into the Southern Ocean. Will include measurements of Southern Ocean clouds.
  • Yi Huang (Uni Melb):

    • CoE for 21st Century Weather (W21C) is underway.
    • There will be a global hackathon on km-scale modelling on the week of May 12th
      • Exploring using Digital Earth’s 6-8 climate models at 5km (or finer) resolution. This includes a UM based model
      • 60-70 participants in Australia, mainly early career reserachers
  1. Science talk - Towards enhancing climate projections through improved understanding and simulations of marine low clouds by Qinggang Gao
  • There was discussion on the contributions of cloud water vs cloud ice to Top of Atmosphere fluxes. By looking at low vs middle cloud (defined via pressure levels) there didn’t seem to be much to change the conclusions – even allowing for different thresholds across models.

  • Also discussion on possible use of a satellite radiance simulator although unclear if suitable model fields are accessible.

  1. Short talk - W21C plans by Bethan White
  • Flagship innovation of ACCESS-rAM3, using CABLE as the surface exchange model. Will be running at km-scale over a large area (Victoria, Tasmania and NSW)

  • Will develop a Global N512 (possibly higher resolution) version, coupled to MOM3.

  • Also considering developing a coupled regional suite

  1. ACCESS-rAM3: Beta release & future development: Heidi Nettelbeck
  • ACCESS-NRI supported release of ACCESS-rAM3, an implementation of the UKMO Regional Nesting Suite, is now available to the community.
  • You can find more information about ACCESS-rAM3 and what you can expect to do with it in the Release Information on the Hive Forum.
  1. Momentum User Workshop 2025 (9-13 June): Charmaine Franklin
  • UKMO Momentum Workshop will include a range of topics, e.g., idealised LFRic modelling workshop, regional session focussed on RAL3-LFRic, etc.

  • Rough program:

    • 9th June: Machine learning, Partner update (operational & development, status & plans)
    • 10th June: Land Surface, LFric for idealized systems (and UM)
    • 11th June: Global Modelling, GC5_LFRic, Earth System Modelling for CMIP7 (and LFRic version)
    • 12th June: Regional LFRic evaluation, includes Data Assimilation and km-scale climate modelling
    • 13th June: Technical, Improved viability, Research to Operations (Numerical Weather Prediction)
  1. AAF authentication on ACCESS-Hive Forum: Heidi Nettelbeck
  1. Compute/storage resources: Heidi Nettelbeck
  • We have 875 kSU allocation for Q2/2025 for experiments.
  • See here for how to apply for Atmosphere WG Resources.
