MOM5 Freshwater restoring flux

Hi all! I’m looking at the surface flux terms in an ACCESS-OM2-01 experiment, where I used prescribed restoring input as a freshwater flux in pme_correct. I was looking to confirm whether this pme_correct restoring term would be included in the total pme_river water mass flux variable? The variable descriptions seem like it should be, but I wasn’t sure how to check properly. Any insights would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Katja - @dougiesquire is on leave, so we might need @angus-g

It looks to me like pme_river is calculated without pme_correct

e.g:

pme_river is calculated first:

and the pme_correct is calculated later and added to pme but not pme_river:

Except from what I can tell, the pme_river diagnostic is saved after pme_correct is added to pme, and it saves pme + river, not pme_river. Is that right @anton ?

It’s not very clear but I don’t think so :

pme_river diag is written as part of subroutine ocean_sbc_diag which is called in subroutine get_ocean_sbc

pme_correct diag is written in subroutine flux_adjust which is called after get_ocean_sbc

Do the outputs of pme_river look like they include the correction ?

When I assumed that pme_river did not include the correction, the answers looked much more reasonable compared to when I tested with the assumption that pme_river did include the correction
