Using ACCESS-rAM3 to examine the role of latent heating in large poleward moisture transport events
Corey Robinson
The tropical moist margin describes the boundary between the moist and rainy deep tropics and the dry and clear subtropics. However, the physical processes governing the movement of the moist margin on weather scales are not known. In this work, we examine cases where the moist margin moves particularly far poleward and interacts with the synoptic flow in the extratropics. We run experiments with the ACCESS-rAM3 model with modified latent heating to determine the importance of diabatic processes, in particular convective heating, for the strength of this tropical-extratropical interaction. Details of the experimental setup and preliminary results will be presented.
