Recent forcing data for ACCESS-rAM3

Hi,

I’m interested in running ACCESS-rAM3 for the recent heatwave in Dec 2025 - Jan 2026 and was wondering when OSTIA SSTs and ERA5 data for this recent period will be available for ACCESS-rAM3? It doesn’t seem to be available given a test:

Cheers,

Joel

Hi Joel

We aren’t at the moment downloading the near real-time data for OSTIA SSTs - although it is available. See Global Ocean OSTIA Sea Surface Temperature and Sea Ice Analysis | Copernicus Marine Service and would be easy enough for you to download. Note that of course it may have some refinements before it goes into the final version of the OSTIA SST dataset. The preprocessing would need to be configured to use the correct netcdf files for the period of interest.

Thanks Anton, that helps a lot

That’s good to know that OSTIA can be downloaded. What about the other input datasets (ERA5, BARRA-R2, ERA5-LAND), is there any documentation that explains the current supported time periods for each of these data sources? If not, that would be a useful part of rAM3 docs.

Hi @Jatreutlein and @mlipson,

The dates available for ERA5, BARRA-R2 and ERA5-LAND can be seen from the data archives on NCI.

The time periods for inputs in yyyy/mm/dd are:

ERA5: 1940/01/01 to 2025/07/31.

BARRA-R2: 1979/01/01 to 2025/05/31.

OSTIA: 1981/10/01 to 2022/05/31.

I didn’t include ERA5-land as I presume you prefer BARRA. Let me know if you want that too.

For more recent datasets you may need to discuss running from operational driving data from either the Met Office or the Bureau, but please note that operational driving datasets may require requests to individuals.
