Running costs of UM7.3 vs UM10

Hi,
After some interesting breakout discussions in the workshop, I was wondering, is there a benchmark comparison of running costs and walltime between UM7.3 and UM10, when both are run at N96 with the same number of vertical levels? In comparing ACCESS-ESM1.5 and ACCESS-CM2 I would quite like to know, how much of the extra computational expense of ACCESS-CM2 is due to resolution, and how much is due to moving from UM7 to UM10.

As an alternative to a rigorous formal benchmark, has anyone got a rough estimate from previous simulations of:

  • SU cost and walltime of running UM7.3 at N96 in atmosphere-only mode?
  • SU cost and walltime of running UM10 at N96 in atmosphere-only mode?

Any sharing of previous experience would be appreciated here.

Hi @dkhutch, I have some previous runs of the AMIP configuration of ESM1.5 with UM7.3 at N96 resoluton. Using 192 CPUs the resource usage was:

  • SUs ≈ 435SU per year
  • Walltime ≈ 1 hour 8 mins per year
