Selecting the Indian Ocean region (which includes the seam) from ACCESS-OM ocean model output

I would like to select Indian Ocean 40E-100E, 20S-20N

idir = '/g/data/p66/mrd599/cq880/history/ocn/'
fname = idir + 'ocean-2d-surface_pot_temp-1-monthly-mean-ym_03*.nc'

ds = xr.open_mfdataset(fname, combine='by_coords')
ds.surface_pot_temp
lat_range = (-20, 20)
lon_range = (40, 100)
ds2 = ds.assign_coords({"xt_ocean": (ds["xt_ocean"] + 360)  % 360}) # <- previous suggested but not working

lon_indices = np.where((ds2.xt_ocean >= lon_range[0]) & (ds2.xt_ocean <= lon_range[1]))[0]
lat_indices = np.where((ds.yt_ocean >= lat_range[0]) & (ds.yt_ocean <= lat_range[1]))[0]
print(lon_indices)

The output does not make sense:

This just resets the coordinate values to be in the range 0-360 deg, but the Indian Ocean is still split across the edge of the array. There are a number of ways of dealing with slicing periodic coordinates across array edges, but the simplest here is to sort by xt_ocean prior to slicing out the Indian Ocean. E.g., picking up from your code:

ds_indian_ocean = ds2.sortby("xt_ocean").sel(
    xt_ocean=slice(40, 100),
    yt_ocean=slice(-20, 20),
)

Many thanks!! I will give a try now.
