ACEAS Research Forum - Call for discussion session input

At the ACEAS Research Forum coming up in Hobart 5-7 November, there are several discussion sessions being held.

Matt England and I have been asked to lead the session: Connecting ocean models to observations

Thursday 6th November, 9:30-10:45, Stanley Burbury Theatre and surrounds, UTAS

Our initial plan is to have a couple of invited overview talks to get us thinking (5 mins each). This will be followed by short pitches from you for projects to address your burning question in ocean-related research that would achieve better/faster/more impactful results if observations and models were examined in parallel. Discussion of the pitches will follow to map out what resources are needed and who needs to be involved. The goal is to come up with 1 or 2 projects that are ready to run.

Please start thinking and let Matt or me know when you have the start of an idea.

We are also hoping to benefit from a discussion at the AAPP Workshop last week: Innovative Future Observations and Analyses for Antarctica and Southern Ocean

The discussion there covered

  1. Observing the declining AABW - or lower limb of SO overturning circulation (argo, deep argo, satellites, grace, etc etc)

  2. Observing the upper limb of the over-turning circulation (argo, deep argo, satellites, grace, etc etc)

  3. Changing Ecosystems and Carbon Cycle (bgc, argo, Schmidt foundation (VICC))

  4. Observing the changing Ice Sheet Mass loss and eroding ice shelves (Grace, other measures, SSH, etc etc)

  5. Declining Fast Ice

If you won’t be at the ACEAS Forum but have an idea, feel free to share it anyway. We are program agnostic. Ideally, the program borders are only about funding and the research collaborations cut across these. Please share with anyone else you think might be interested.

Helen and Matt
