Call for session proposals for 2026 Australian Antarctic Research Conference

The Australian Antarctic Research Conference will be held in Hobart from 25 - 28 August. They are calling for session proposals to be submitted by 2 April using this form.

It would be great for the COSIMA community to be well represented amongst the parallel sessions at this conference. I propose we have a discussion in this thread on what sessions we might want and volunteers to co-chair these (ideally with some observationalists invited to co-chair also) who can submit at the form above.

Here’s a start for session theme brainstorming:

  • Ocean Dynamics of the Southern Ocean and Antarctic Continental Shelf
  • Understanding Antarctic Sea Ice in a Changing Climate
  • Southern Ocean Biogeochemistry and Ecosystem Processes

I am very happy not to be involved if there are enough others who can co-chair! I’m just keen to make sure there are enough relevant sessions for us to submit abstracts to and attend.

Please discuss and volunteer to get involved below if you are interested:

I’d be happy to help co-chair the dynamics session

I’m happy to help co-chair either the first or second session, pending others interests.

@tylerrohr22 any thoughts on whether there would be enough interest for a session on something like Southern Ocean Biogeochemistry (and Ecosystem?) Processes at the Australian Antarctic Research Conference and who from COSIMA may be interested in getting involved in submitting something?

I’d certainly hope so!

I think @adele-morrison 3 main suggestions are great; but one thing I’m really interested in as a more “multidisciplinary” session. Maybe “impacts of sudden polar change” (although I’d be just as happy with a more process-based session focussed on ocean-atmos-sea ice-cryosphere interactions).

Do y’all think this would work or just serve to dilute the other sessions?

I’m also keen on some modeller-obs engagement, but that might be more of a breakout-type session

Just FYI, as well as the parallel sessions, there are also plenary sessions on these topics:

  • Antarctic ice loss and its impacts
  • Protecting Antarctica from existing and emerging threats
  • The past, present and future of Antarctic and Southern Ocean systems
  • Innovations in Antarctic and Southern Ocean research capabilities
  • Antarctic research for decision-making
  • Looking forward: Australian Antarctic research over the next decade

You can also volunteer to chair these plenary sessions at the form here.

@willrhobbs possibly “impacts of sudden polar change” could come under “existing and emerging threats” ? But also happy if you want to submit another parallel session topic on this!

There will be discussion sessions run in parallel to lunch like we did at the ACCESS-NRI workshop in September that we will be calling for ideas/volunteers for at some point also.

I was just thinking that I would like to propose a session about Antarctic sea ice. I’d be keen on being part of that.

Ya, I’d certainly hope so! But agree extending to Ecosystems and more explicitly carbon (although already implied in BGC of course) could help get numbers up. Maybe Annika (@oetjensa) would be keen to lead as she’s sitting nicely on the SO -BGC Obs-model divide now. And I could help co-convene with her, perhaps. Ill enquire.

Thanks Adele for kicking this off!

FYI Klaus Meiners, @NoahDay and likely another convenor will propose an Antarctic Marginal Ice Zone themed parallel session, with the aim of guiding the science toward the 2028 Nuyina voyage.

We just mentioned other session ideas in our sea ice group meeting, and agreed that the MIZ session wouldn’t capture the whole scope of the community - definitely need another one (or more) along the lines of your brainstorming. Thanks Adele.

I have an interest in co-organising or helping organise a parallel session engaging with topics of research planning, observation gaps, or the integration of ocean observations and modelling as suggested by @willrhobbs . Because of the nature of my role at IMOS, I need to pair with someone from the community to justify going to the conference so I reached out to Helen P who ran “Modelling for Rapid Progress in Understanding Southern Ocean Processes” in the past AARC as a start to see what can be proposed in that space without being redundant. We will be meeting next week to discuss. Anyone thinking of something along these lines?

Hi, I’m interested in co-chairing the ocean dynamics session.

Also, is anyone interested in teaming up to run a break-out session focusing on ocean-atm-cryosphere interaction??

Our sea ice group had a bit of a chat yesterday and we felt that there’s room for a “talks” session on sea ice, but also a broader “workshop” looking a bit more to the near-future.
I’m pretty agnostic on the specific topic - extremes, rapid change, physics/ecosystem synthesis, anything else - but would be nice to folow @ribeirosantosn idea of model/obs synthesis.

I’m happy to co-convene, but I think it’s a good opportunity for an ECR to take the lead

What is the best way to proceed with this discussion? From this thread, there seems to be interest by the following people per suggested topic:

ocean dynamics: Julia, Wilma, Hannah, Adele?
sea ice: Hannah, Will, Elio, Natalia?
BGC: Tylor

I suggest these people get together in sub-groups to discuss details. (Looks like the sea ice people are ahead of the game.)

Apologies if I missed anyone and please feel free to still express interest by either responding here or directly contacting anyone listed above.

I think Amelie Meyer expressed interest in the sea ice session. So perhaps the sea ice session could be Elio, myself and Amelie (if @willrhobbs is submitting a different session)? Someone else could then help with the ocean dynamics instead of me.

Sounds like a good plan Wilma! I am already on the overall conference steering committee, so happy to remove myself from the ocean dynamics convening list, but it might be nice to invite an observationalist onto that team (e.g. someone like @afop, @helen_ep, @olerieke etc).

Also, would be great to have your discussion sessions on model/obs synthesis and/or rapid change submitted @willrhobbs and @ribeirosantosn!

Hi all, update from the (mildly Hobart-centric, sorry) sea ice side of things:

  1. Klaus Meiners I think will put in a session on the Marginal Ice Zone, not sure what format that will take and Klaus is at sea

  2. As @hrsdawson posted, I there’s a plan for a regular talks-based Antarctic sea ice session and it sounds like there’s plenty of willing folk to co-convene, so I’m happy to keep hands off!

  3. I’ll post up a draft next week for a multidisciplinary discussion/planning session early next week; @ribeirosantosn would you like to co-convene? Keen on model/obs synthesis but my experience is that the discussion will work best if it’s framed around a specific theme or question. (I’m also happy to keep hands off this, if anyone else has strong views/enthusiasm to take this on)

(Regarding co-convening, the general consensus amongst the sea ice community is that we’re happy to co-convene if need be, but prefer some new blood to get the chance!)

Belatedly joining this discussion. Can you loop me into any further discussions on the Ocean Dynamics session? I’d be interested to help and am also more on the obs side.

I’m interested and will be chatting to Helen about this on Tuesday too. Maybe we plus you can get something together then. I’m on parental leave today, but will get back to you on this when I have some interrupted time!

Sent you an email! Let’s keep talking. Cheers
