ANU Climate Fluid Physics Lab needs your support

Hi all,

ANU has made the decision to slash the CFP Lab, a space that has supported many of our researchers and students, and one of the most popular facilities for engaging high school students and undergrads with the ANU Research School of Earth Sciences. Not to mention, it’s the only lab of its kind in Australia.

We’re calling on all students and alumni from CFP and other institutions to sign the open letter to raise their concern about this ANU’s decision. The feedback period on the change proposal closes next Thursday, so if you are intending to sign please do so by Wednesday. Thank you all so much for your support in this process!

@polinash you mentioned “and anyone who is concerned” but the letter is titled “Student concerns regarding…” so I thought the call out was to students (current or past), no?

Shall I sign it for example (being concerned) although I was never a student at RSES, ANU?

Hmm, I was targeting students from other institutions. Maybe we should not open it to absolutely anyone. I’ll edit my message!

Last time they threatened to close it they got a bunch of the good and great to email and say it was a terrible idea.

Is anyone doing something like that as well?

I would like to add my name to offer support, but I was never a student at RSES. I’m sure there are many others in the same boat as myself. @navidcy . Does anyone know of a similar open letter?

I think submissions were due yesterday.

Other than the Student letter above the group’s staff members wrote something as well. But I don’t think any submission was put it from non-alumni people that are not at RSES at the moment.

I think to make a submission you needed to be at ANU (i.e. it was an internal system).

ANU extended the consultation period til Thursday 7th August. I am not aware of any other open letters tho..

It’s a shame it can’t be more widely signed. For example, in my own experience as a UNSW phd student I benefitted from one of these

postgraduates at Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence workshops

which involved (fun!) lab work. I’ve also benefitted from many informal visits to the group.

Thanks for coordinating.
