Evaluation of ENSO and climate metrics in ACCESS for CMIP7 and beyond. Co-chairs: Christine Chung, (Bureau of Meteorology) and Harun Rashid (CSIRO)

Description: Comprehensive evaluation of climate and earth system models is essential for advancing scientific research and improvements in climate modelling. A new version of the Australian Community Climate and Earth System Simulator (ACCESS) is now being developed for participation in the upcoming Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) phase 7. This breakout session aims to discuss and explore:
· the methodology and target variables, diagnostics, and climate driver metrics to be used for evaluations of the next generation ACCESS and other CMIP7 models.
· the scope and potential benefits of process-based model evaluations, with an emphasis on El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO).
· bridging the gap between evaluation studies and model development - making model evaluations more useful for model improvements.
· community evaluation efforts - common tools and packages.

Hey Jemma - these look like notes for the machine learning session rather than evaluation? Thanks!

Hi everyone,

Thank you for attending this session and for your valuable discussion and input. Please see some notes here: ACCESS Workshop Evaluation breakout session - Google Docs

Feel free to add any ideas or further discussion here. It was great to see some momentum building around connecting model users and developers - we will be in touch soon with next steps!

Ooops, I’ll move them across. Thanks
