CMIP7 Analysis Workshops

Please see the announcement below for some upcoming virtual CMIP7 Analysis Workshops in October/November

------------

We are pleased to invite the community to participate in the CMIP7 Analysis Workshops, a new series of community-led virtual workshops focused on coordinated analysis of the CMIP7 Assessment Fast Track (AFT) simulations.

Designed to bring the community together around key scientific questions identified in the CMIP7 Overview Paper (Dunne et al., 2025), these workshops will provide a forum to coordinate analysis activities, identify opportunities for collaboration, and maximise the scientific value of CMIP7 simulations in time to inform the IPCC Seventh Assessment Report (AR7).

Each workshop will focus on one of four fundamental CMIP7 science questions, as identified by the CMIP Panel:

  1. Patterns of sea surface temperature change
How will tropical ocean temperature patterns co-evolve with those at higher latitudes?
  2. Changing weather
How will dangerous weather patterns evolve?
  3. Water-carbon-climate nexus
How will Earth respond to human efforts to manage the carbon cycle?
  4. Tipping points
What are the risks of triggering irreversible changes across possible climate trajectories?

Through presentations, discussions and breakout sessions, participants will identify priority research topics, explore opportunities for coordinated publications, and begin forming international author teams. The workshops are intended to minimise duplication of effort, encourage collaboration across modelling centres and MIPs, and accelerate progress towards robust and impactful scientific outcomes from CMIP7.

When are the launch dates for each question?

Each question will have a dedicated session:

We recognise that a single time slot will not suit all regions of the world. If you are unable to attend a launch meeting, you can still register your interest through the form.

Who is invited to attend?

The workshops are open to everyone interested in CMIP7 analysis, including:

  • Modelling centres
  • MIP leaders and participants
  • Observational scientists
  • Impact and applications researchers
  • Early career researchers
  • Scientists from related communities interested in contributing to coordinated analyses

Following the launch sessions, participants will be invited to propose paper topics, volunteer to lead analyses, and join collaborative author teams. An overarching timeline has been developed to help the community deliver papers in time for potential consideration by AR7 authors, with a recommended paper submission deadline of 22 February 2027.

How do I register?

If you are planning to analyse CMIP7 Assessment Fast Track simulations, interested in leading a paper, or simply want to connect with others working on the same scientific questions, we encourage you to get involved.
