@shayne and I plan to run a present-day control simulation using the atmosphere-only configuration of ESM1.5. This simulation will serve as a reference for a set of AMIP experiments with various SST warming patterns.
While we have ancillary files (e.g., aerosols, ozone) for the AMIP piControl run, I have not been able to find a corresponding set of ancillaries for the present-day configuration. @tiloz have also confirmed that an ESM1.5 AMIP present-day suite and the associated ancillary files are not currently available.
Would it be possible for the ACCESS-NRI team to assist us in developing an ESM1.5 AMIP present-day suite and preparing the necessary ancillary files for our experiments? Your support in setting this up would be greatly appreciated.

@abhik , we are assessing what we can do here and when. Unfortunately, the people most likely to know about this are all on leave today, so I’m not sure we’ll have a definitive answer before Monday.
@MartinDix We’re happy to proceed with that approach. However, it’s important to maintain consistency by using either time-averaged ancillaries, as in the CM2 present-day control suite, or time-varying ancillaries, as used in the ESM1.5 AMIP suite.
It would also be helpful to have clear guidance on how to replace the existing ancillaries in the suite with periodic time-averaged versions, so the setup remains consistent throughout the experiments.
@MartinDix Apologies if my earlier post was unclear. We’ve decided to use the CMIP6 PD control (1995–2014 mean) forcing for our experiment, so it would be appreciated if you could generate the corresponding ESM1.5 ancillary files for this setup.
In addition, we were hoping to do a similar run for the late projections period (2081-2100), so we were hoping you could also generate a second set of ancillary files for the ESM1.5? These ancillary files would represent the 2081–2100 mean forcing based on ESM1.5 SSP5-8.5 simulations for our late projection period experiments.
In regard to using these ancillary files, is it simply a matter of changing the namelist?
@MartinDix Just wanted to follow up on our earlier request. We’re still hoping to use the CMIP6 present-day control (1995-2014 mean) ancillaries for our experiment and would appreciate it if the corresponding ESM1.5 ancillary files could be generated.
We would also like a second set of ancillary files representing the 2081-2100 mean forcing based on ESM1.5 SSP5-8.5 simulations for our future projection experiments.
Could you please let us know whether this request is feasible?
Also, to confirm, would using these new ancillary files simply require updating the namelist, or are additional changes needed within the suite? Thanks.
I am just touching base to see whether Abhik’s request for help putting together present day control (1995-2014) and future climate (2081-2100) ESM1.5 ancillary files is something that could possibly be done within the NRI? If this is not possible we will start to think about a work around so that we can carry out these experiments, which are a part of NESP project about uncharted futures that has generated a fair bit of local interest.
Hi @abhik and @ShayneM, apologies for our slow response here. We will get back to you in the next day or two as to whether this will be doable from our end. Thanks for your patience!
There was a meeting at ACCESS-NRI today and the conclusion was that the ESM team can help with setting up the ancillary files, however we won’t have capacity to look at this until the ESM1.6 code and core configurations are finalised. We suspect this won’t happen until the new year.
@paigem Thanks for the update. We’re glad to hear that the ESM team will be able to help with the ancillary files.
We do have a fairly tight schedule, so it would be extremely helpful if ACCESS-NRI could generate the ancillary files as early as possible once capacity becomes available. We appreciate your support and look forward to working with the team.
