ESMValTool 2.15 available in analysis3-26.08

ESMValTool 2.15 available in analysis3-26.08 :tada:

ESMValTool v2.15 is now available on Gadi through the ACCESS-NRI analysis3 environment, from conda/analysis3-26.08 onward.

module use /g/data/xp65/public/modules
module load conda/analysis3-26.08

This is the first ESMValTool release managed by ACCESS-NRI since we joined the ESMValTool Consortium, and it’s a significant one for ACCESS evaluation workflows: it delivers the first wave of recipes prepared for the CMIP7 Rapid Evaluation Framework (REF), alongside a major refresh of the observational and CMIP data holdings on Gadi.

REF / CMIP7 highlights

  • New and updated recipes made REF-ready for CMIP7, including ZEC (Zero Emissions Commitment), ECS, TCR and TCRE, cloud radiative effects (CRE), sea ice sensitivity, fire climate drivers, and updated ozone and regional-change recipes.
  • A new ENSO metrics recipe, co-developed and maintained by @Flick.Chun , providing REF-compatible ENSO diagnostics for CMIP7 evaluation.
  • Preliminary CMIP7 CMOR table updates in ESMValCore (now at DR-1.2.2.3-v1.0.6), building on the early CMIP7 support introduced in 2.14.

Data updates on Gadi (ACCESS-NRI curated)

  • Observations in ct11 refreshed and adjusted for CMIP7 recipe requirements, with most datasets now extended through 2021 (some further — e.g. EN4 to 2025, ESACCI-OZONE to 2023/24).
  • CMIP6 holdings in oi10 updated so that all CMIP6-related ESMValTool recipes can now be run against locally held data.
  • Additional CMIP5 data added in av17.

Other notable changes

  • CORDEX-CMIP6 CMOR table support in ESMValCore, plus CORDEX preprocessor/regridding improvements.
  • Python 3.14 support, a minimal-dependency install option, and a move to pixi for managing ESMValTool development environments.
  • Backwards-incompatible changes to note: automatic CORDEX grid standardisation was removed from ESMValCore (add use_standard_grid: true explicitly where needed); the extra_facets_dir option and the automatic ~/.esmvaltool/extra_facets/ lookup were discontinued; and several multi_datasets.py plot options were renamed (show_x_minor_ticksx_minor_formatter, show_y_minor_ticksy_minor_formatter, time_ontranspose_axes).
