ESMValTool 2.14 available in analysis3-26.04

ESMValTool v2.14 is now available on Gadi through the ACCESS-NRI analysis3 environment, from conda/analysis3-26.04 onward.

From an ACCESS point of view, this release is particularly relevant because it includes early CMIP7 support in ESMValCore, improvements to configuration and CMOR table handling, and new support for accessing data through intake-esgf. These changes are useful for emerging ACCESS evaluation workflows, including CMIP7/CMIP6Plus-oriented work and Rapid Evaluation Framework development.

Highlights include:

  • preliminary CMIP7 data support in ESMValCore;
  • new esmvaltool config commands and updated configuration handling;
  • more flexible CMOR table configuration, including support for data not fully described by a standard CMOR table;
  • new diagnostics/recipes, including Lamb weather types, histogram plots, and hour-of-maximum-precipitation diagnostics;
  • new or improved observational dataset support, including ESACCI SNOW, ESACCI AEROSOL, and EN4;
  • various recipe, documentation, testing, and installation improvements.

One thing to note: ESMValTool 2.14 includes some backwards-incompatible changes, especially around configuration paths and CMORizer command options, so users migrating older workflows may need to update their configuration or commands.
