Experiment Proposal: ACCESS-ESM1.6 DAMIP runs for CMIP7

Experiment title :bell:: ESM1.6 DAMIP runs for CMIP7

Summary :bell:: Production runs for the Detection Attribution MIP for CMIP7

Scientific motivation:

The Detection and Attribution Model Intercomparison Project (DAMIP) is part of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6), a coordinated international effort “to better understand past, present and future climate changes arising from either natural, unforced variability or in response to changes in radiative forcing in a multi-model context.”

DAMIP is the component of CMIP6 dealing with understanding the individual contributions of various external factors to past and future changes in global and regional climate. The primary goals of DAMIP are to facilitate improved estimation of the contributions of anthropogenic and natural forcing changes to observed global warming as well as to observed global and regional changes in other climate variables; to contribute to the estimation of how historical emissions have altered and are altering contemporary climate risk; and to facilitate improved observationally-constrained projections of future climate change.

Experiment Name :bell:: esm16_damip
People :bell:: Christine Chung, Zoe Gillett, Ghyslaine Boschat, Rachel Law, Tilo Ziehn, in collaboration with colleagues in NESP
Model: ACCESS-ESM1.6
Configuration: 3x single forcing configurations (GHG-only, aerosol-only, natural-only)
Initial conditions: Simulations will be branched from
Run plan: 3 ensemble members per configuration (9 in total) - 185 years per member
Simulation details:

The model will be run over the Historical period with a slight overlap into the future (1850-2035) under three configurations (GHG-only, aerosol-only and natural-only) to isolate the impacts of these forcings. Each configuration will consist of 3 members. The future forcings would come from the Medium scenario. These runs will form part of the ACCESS consortium’s official submission to the CMIP7 Assessment Fast Track.

Total KSUs required :bell:: 1.665 MSU (~1kSU per year x 185 years x 9 members)
Total storage required :bell:: None from lg87. Output is 31.6 TB, but can be written to p66 scratch initially
Storage lifetime :bell:: Around 6 months, until it can be post-processed and archived.
Long term data plan :bell:: To be stored on NCI ESGF node once post-processed
Outputs: Standard CMIP7 variables
Restarts: TBC
