Occurring on Zoom, Monday 11:30-12:30 every 2 weeks, offset from the 21st Century Weather ModSci meetings, starting Monday 1 September.
Suggested items for today’s meeting (cross-posting from Cumulus):
-
Recap decisions made in the NRI meeting last week (Julie and Li?)
-
Working practice recommendations (Pao)
Anything else we need to cover today?
Hi all, given that tomorrow is a public holiday in VIC, can I ask for any suggested agenda items for Monday’s meeting?
Cross-posting from Cumulus with the agenda for our next meeting (Monday 13 October):
-
summary of the bugs & bug fixes uncovered (@m.lipson to lead)
-
workflow moving forward (@paocorrales to lead)
-
optimisation (@paocorrales )
UPDATE: Thanks to the excellent collaboration between 21st Century Weather and the ACCESS NRI, we now have a working N512 version of ACCESS AM3.
Shixue Li (@lishx) presented on the progress at this month’s Atmospheric Model working group meeting - see the meeting minutes here
Cross-posting meeting notes here:
Minutes from 10 November meeting:
Github & Hive updates (Lachlan):
- ACCESS NRI private repositories are now able to be forked to 21st Century Weather which allows them to be pushed back too
- Rename the high-res AM3 category on the Hive Forum as “AM3” and use a “high-res AM3” label
Final steps towards running a longer experiment
- NCMAS application submitted to perform the highresSST-present experiment at N512 resolution. Asked for 15 kSU per month = 7740 kSU for 43 years, will find out on 6 Jan. Either way we want to have a final version tested to start running experiments in Q1 2026
- Land surface ancillaries
- Mat: would be good to test higher resolution land ancillaries as a base e.g. using CCI as a starting point rather than current 0.5 deg dataset. Lachlan: currently implementing the use of the CCI dataset - making the treatment of lakes consistent with OM3 & CM3 i.e. any inland water (other than the Black Sea) as a lake rather than a dynamic ocean. Once that is complete can port to Martin’s ancillary suite - hopefully in the next week or two @LachlanWhyborn
- Discussion around land initial conditions - Martin suggested running N96 using CCI land surface ancillaries to get land initial conditions.
- SSTs/sea-ice
- would be good to test ESA SSTs/sea-ice (0.05 deg) which will be used in highresSST-present @julie.arblaster
- ozone & aerosol climatologies
- create N96 versions to be consistent with N512 @martin.dix
- Code base
- Martin has been testing UM13.5 but will stick to UM13.1 for AM3 release. No change in science so no need for us to upgrade either
- Australian specific PFTs for CABLE are now in ESM1.6. Porting planned to AM3 after initial release
- GC5-central science configuration currently being tested in CM3. Larger impacts than anticipated so currently diagnosing in AM3 AMIP runs. Ideally we will use this version (but not essential) so @martin.dix to keep us posted on timelines
- Urban: waiting on Jan’s work to implement urban stash workflow and then ideally we can use in N512 AM3. @jiachenlu to do some tests at N96 to diagnose the impact of turning urban on
- Table of ancillaries
- Mat suggested creating a table of what is being used for N96 & N512 currently to identify and decide on consistent ancillaries for both @paocorrales @shixue.li
- Optimisation - to be completed once the STASH is finalised
- STASH - @paocorrales will propose a STASH package on Bethan’s Cumulus topic. Will check if the CMIP7 data request includes a HighResMIP2 proposal
Final steps towards running a longer experiment
- agreed to keep meeting fortnightly for now. Next meeting is during the 21st Century Weather workshop so will next meet on 8 December
We’ve been a bit remiss at cross-posting minutes from our High-res Global AM3 meetings recently. Here is the latest from Monday 1 March, 2026.
Note some of the links point to posts on our 21st Century Weather forum, Cumulus. All in the weather and climate community are welcome to join Cumulus, just send an email to julie.arblaster at monash.edu and we’ll add you.
Minutes 1 March 2026

Pao: reconfiguration of initial conditions from N96 to N512 now works, though need to run some additional scripts to fix some bad values at the north pole for the model to run. Pao tried all the different types of interpolation in the reconfiguration code but none worked directly. Now posted as an issue by Martin for something requiring fixing long-term.
-
Confirmed that we will do a 1-year run at N512 which will act as our control for various tests. The experimental set-up uses:
-
initial conditions: the N96 restarts reconfigured to N512 for the initial conditions
-
boundary conditions: identical to N96 i.e. Reynolds OI SSTs/sea-ice which are daily at 0.25 deg resolution, land surface ancillaries (NCAR), urban scheme will be turned off, 4-D ozone. The one difference to the N96 experiment is the use of climatological aerosols vs prognostic due to computational expense
-
use the n512e code (which is the latest code, e = endgame) and these branches:

n96: https://github.com/21centuryweather/access-am3-configs/tree/dev-n96e-aeroclim
n512: https://github.com/21centuryweather/access-am3-configs/tree/dev-n512-aeroclim

STASH: @paocorrales modified STASH list based on everyones feedback. In consultation with the weather systems group, agreed to post-process multi-level fields to 0.5 deg resolution to save space
-
year: agreed on the year 2008 to feed into the ENSO experiments planned
-
ACTION: @martin.dix to run N96 AM3 AMIP run ASAP so we have initial conditions for 2008
-
ACTION: @paocorrales to request 16 kSU for these experiments this quarter using project fy29
-
proposed test runs (climatological vs time varying aerosols, CCI vs NCAR land ancillaries) to compare to this control: AM3 test runs - Google Sheets. Please populate/edit and we will highlight and pin in a new topic for easier reference
-
feedback on alpha release due by today but Martin/Lachlan said the end of the week is fine. We discussed some suggestions for improved documentation (e.g. how to run with climatological aerosols). Also discussed the ‘future developments’ section listed (see hive post here which includes an N512 configuration. We agreed to highlight via the hive our keen interest in the N512 configuration and urban scheme being included in the beta release.

Post-script: @paocorrales mentioned after the meeting that CABLE fields soil moisture, soil temperature, snow density etc do not get reconfigured automatically. The fix_cable_initial_conditions_6l.py code translates the JULES STASH output (that are generated by the reconfiguration code at N512) to CABLE STASH fields. Since some fields are not available in JULES, the N512 soil/snow variables are not always initialised properly. For a cleaner comparison between N96 and N512, we should also use the fix_cable_inital_conditions_6l.py code to create the N96 CABLE STASH fields
