TERN Science Symposium 2025

TERN is delighted to announce its Biennial Science Symposium will be held on Wednesday and Thursday 2-3 July 2025 at the Queensland State Library in Brisbane, Australia.

It is 15 years since TERN published its first data, so we are anticipating some great talks on use of TERN data to advance ecosystem science, build collaborative projects and as a catalyst for innovation, outreach and translation.

Join us at the TERN 2025 Science Symposium in Brisbane. It is the forum that brings together ecosystem researchers, students, government and industry as they give an update on their latest research, technological developments, data system innovations and collaborations. The event allows for in-person and online participation, fostering networking and professional learning.

Symposium themes​

In 2025 we are looking forward to exploring how your research or planned research help to address a range of current societal challenges, including the following:

  1. Biocomplexity – how, what, where and why
  2. Greenhouse gases – carbon and others
  3. About the future – e.g. modelling, predicting, forecasting, simulating, scenarios
  4. Monitoring methods – e.g. standards, collections and technology innovations
  5. About data – e.g. infrastructure, synthesis, trust, sensitivities, vocabularies
  6. Innovations in education, skills, training or outreach initiatives
  7. Earth Observation and in-situ validation
  8. Impact stories – e.g. leveraging TERN research infrastructure and data to contribute to the sustainable management of Australia’s environment.

  • A celebration and recognition of the role of national research infrastructure, data streams, samples and data products

  • A forum for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander researchers
  • An online and physical meeting place for ecosystem researchers, data managers and end-users from the East Asia Pacific region
  • A revelation of what is being achieved in cross disciplinary research
  • A stimulating environment for discussion
  • A demonstration of the value of ongoing investment in national research infrastructure and monitoring programs
