Please feel free to use this thread for comments about the discussion for the 11:30-13:00 session where we discussed the ACCESS ice sheet modelling team, ACCESS-ISSM development and the WG community plans.
Cryosphere modelling discussion (feel free to edit!)
Lenneke showed Mikeβs slides about python API and infrastructure for ISSM running, analysis
Land surface coupling challenging β how to connect to atmosphere, albedo, lots of communication needed EARLY with land WG
What datasets does ice sheet need for other working groups and what can the ice sheet provide? A priority list needed
Connect with paleoclimate (ESM) community as they are interested in ice sheet changes too
Interaction with solid earth also challenging with UM, orography, coastlines may not be able to change
Suggestion of ISSM training 2 day workshop β ISSM friendly and helpful, important to build that collaboration
Aim to build community of ice sheet modelers, even amongst non-ISSM users, since itβs a small ice sheet modelers community at the moment.
What kind of experiments/projects do people run β standard control runs, perturbations (like cosima?), or more individual runs. This guides what useful infrastructure is needed
Easy-to-run infrastructure for honours students to just start running models or analysing data easily. ACCESS-NRI plays a role in this
Analysis cookbook β mismip and misomip as an example? Obtain from international users if no Australian runs?
Centrally coordinated forcing data very helpful for the future (benefits all ice sheet modellers)
Cataloguing important of results using intake catalogue
AAD data library exists
Multimodel is a strength, seen also in ocean and land communities, especially for science questions, where some models are better at different things e.g. process studies. Want to continue connecting entire ice sheet community even if using different models
However, sensible to target ISSM as a future Australian capability
Idea that community should keep trying to keep entire ice sheet modelling community connected with focus on research rather than only focus on ACCESS model β what is this ACCESS-NRI CMWG exactly and how does it connected to the entire ice sheet modelling community in Australia (is it a subgroup?). Who is the audience for the CMWG meeting and can we expand the audience of seminars relevant to a broader group of people? Invite other parts of cryosphere and science techniques e.g. obs in meetings too.
Benchmarking software is something ACCESS-NRI might be able to help with? ESMValTool for ice sheets β hard with the different ice sheet grids?
