Hi,
A reminder that the first period for community input on the ACCESS‑NRI Work Plan for FY26–27 is now open and will close on Monday, 16 March . If you haven’t already, please take a moment to share your feedback, through this form—your insights are essential to shaping the upcoming work plan.
We welcome all input, big or small, new ideas or projects already discussed, ideas on model development, usability, release, accessibility, evaluation, tools, etc.

Applications now open for the ACCESS-NRI PhD Internship Program!
This 3-month internship provides an opportunity to work alongside ACCESS-NRI staff on activities related to the development, testing, and release of climate models as well as the supporting software and data that underpin them.
This is the first of two rounds this year and is open to PhD students from the Australian National University, UNSW, and the University of Tasmania. We expect to open a second internship round later in 2026 that will also include Monash University and the University of Melbourne.
ACCESS-NRI partner universities ANU, UNSW, UTas (including AAD), Monash Uni and UniMelb have recently signed an updated agreement outlining the conditions in this new EULA. Individuals affiliated with these partner universities are now being asked to read and accept the Terms of Use for the Agreement so they can continue accessing UKMO software and documentation. If this applies to you, please complete the UKMO Licensing process by following the steps on the UKMO EULA signing page. For verification purposes, you must haveAAF Authentication on your ACCESS-Hive Forum account.
Please complete this by 8 May 2026 so that you can continue to use and access UKMO software and licensed material.

For any interested CSWG members - please feel free to share with colleagues:
Where: Melbourne, on the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation.
When: 19–21 August 2026.
Aims of the Workshop
Facilitate communication and collaboration between members of the ML and physical science communities, by sharing with each other latest machine learning tools, and key open problems in weather, climate, and Earth system physics.
Deliver training sessions on community requested ML approaches and/or fundamental science.
Aim to develop a community white paper articulating challenges and opportunities in the adoption of ML for solving archetypal problems in weather and climate, specific to the Australian region.
Who could benefit from participating
Anyone from the machine learning (ML) community looking to promote their latest methods to the community, and learn about key problems in weather and climate within the Earth system sciences.
Anyone from the physical science communities (i.e. weather, climate, atmosphere, ocean, sea-ice, land, bio-geo-chemistry, etc.), looking to communicate key open questions in their own lines of research, and identify how potential ML approaches may assist.
Students, early-mid career researchers, senior researchers, research software engineers and practitioners are all welcome.
Specific community working group (CWG) days will be arranged for the ACCESS-NRI Machine learning for climate and weather CWG, and Atmosphere Modelling CWG. Arrangements can also be made for other working groups that may wish to meet.
We are looking for submissions that contribute to the main aims of the workshop, of building a common knowledge base between the machine learning (ML) and Earth system physics communities.
This will be a general working group catch up. We would particularly encourage folks to present works in progress informally for discussion with a friendly audience!
We are also seeking longer talks for our seminar series, with one to be scheduled in for the end of this month and for later in the year. If you are heading off to a conference soon and would love to be your practice audience. Please get in touch with any of your co-chairs @lmjong, @Chen_Zhao , @fmccormack and @mtetley
See you all on Wednesday!

You can find the agenda for todays meeting here - please free free to add any items on interest or just jump in during the meeting!
Two things that might be of interest to the community:
Mailing List Sign-Up
Anya Reading is leading an Antarctica InSync Working Group on Subglacial Environments of Changing and Vulnerable Outlet Glaciers. There is a mailing list sign-up now live on the website at, and it would be great if you could sign up, and suggest to likely colleagues to do the same
SUBICE26 Oslo Workshop
You are also invited to attend the post-SCAR SUBICE 2026 community workshop on August 15 and the first half of August 16, which will include some InSync WG related discussion. The SCAR OSC website will be updated as soon as firm venue details are confrimed to reflect this longer workshop. This workshop is an opportunity for our community to discuss emerging research directions and upcoming field efforts and identify collaborative opportunities. The workshop is coordinated with the cryoseismology workshop, which will likely take place in the same venue a short walk from the SCAR main venue. If you are thinking of attending, please fill out the following interest form to help planning:
ACCESS-NRI is inviting expressions of interest from domain experts and researchers who would like to collaborate on a 3-6 month visualisation project. We’re offering technical support and expert guidance to help you bring your science to life.
We encourage bold, creative ideas that explore new ways to visualise ACCESS model outputs. It could be a compelling snapshot of climate change impacts, a journey through the ocean’s depths, or a flyover of modelled land surface processes. Be ambitious!
This is your chance to create high-impact visuals (animations, videos, or 3D still images) that showcase your research and amplify its visibility across media, conferences, and the broader community. Successful projects will be supported by:
Owen Kaluza, visualisation expert at ACCESS-NRI: Owen is developing high-impact visualisations to better communicate the work done with ACCESS models and data. His work spans 3D graphics (OpenGL), GPU programming, Python, and notebook-based tools.
