Next ESM Working Group Meeting

Next ESM Working Group Meeting is 2023-05-25T05:00:00Z.

It was decided to have fortnightly meetings after the next meeting, and each meeting would have a science presentation and other discussions around shared goals and priorities as required.

If you want to volunteer to do a short science presentation, or want to suggest a topic for the agenda of the next meeting reply to the “Ideas for topics” on the forum

There will be a reminder sent prior to the meeting, with an agenda of who will present and what else will be discussed.

Meeting notes from todays meeting are available:

Please read them and add your fixes/updates/clarifications. It is a wiki post that is designed to be edited so the responsibility for taking notes does not fall on to just one individual.

My apologies, I put the wrong date in yesterdays announcement.

ACCESS-NRI Workshop Draft Program

David Hutchinson (@dkhutch) has been representing the ESM Working Group in the ACCESS-NRI Program Committee. David has asked for the Draft Workshop Program to be circulated to the community to give you all a chance to take a look and comment before the proposed release date of Tuesday 18th.

For your feedback to be considered you need to include it in a reply to this topic before 4pm Monday 17th.

Dear ESM working group,

Apologies for the late notice. Natalia would like to finalise the speaker invitations to be sent out by tomorrow 26th July. We still have a vacant slot for the ESM working group speaker.
Do we have a volunteer for this? I think what’s required is to give a general update about the ESM working group activities, as other working groups will do the same.

Also, if anyone has suggestions for invited speakers to give a plenary, please also send to Natalia Bateman (or me: david.hutchinson@unsw.edu.au) by tomorrow morning.

Regards,
David

Edit: Please reply to the ACCESS-NRI Workshop topic if you wish to suggest or discuss possible speakers

Dear ESM working group,
A notice about the following session at AMOS 2024, from 5-9 February. There is a session (below) that has multiple co-convenors from the ESM working group, and may be of interest to many of you. Please consider submitting an abstract! Abstract submission deadline is Friday 1 September 11:59pm

David

10. Modelling, prediction and projections of climate variability and past and future climate change

Keywords: Climate, Observations and modelling, Climate variability and change

Convenors: Dr Harun Rashid, Dr Eun-Pa Lim, Dr David Hutchinson, Dr Ian Watterson, Dr Arnold Sullivan, Prof Dietmar Dommenget

Description:

Climate models are valuable tools for understanding the dynamics of atmosphere and ocean and for predicting and projecting climate variability and change. Model simulations provide climate information crucial for planning, mitigation, and adaptation across all sectors of society. CMIP6/CMIP5 multi-model ensembles and several single-model large ensembles, including one from ACCESS-ESM1-5, provide climate information for estimating the past, present, and future climates.

This session, co-organised with the ACCESS-NRI ESM working group, invites oral and poster presentations on modelling and analysis of paleo- and present climate variability and predictability, and their changes over the historical period or under future global warming, using the CMIP or single-model ensembles. Presentations addressing scientific questions on (but not limited to) modes of climate variability, climate extremes, global warming, tropical-extratropical teleconnections, coupled atmosphere-ocean-land-sea ice variability, and dynamical seasonal and decadal predictions are welcome. We also invite efforts to model past climates, e.g., for glacial-interglacial periods/deep-time intervals.

Dear Colleagues,

We would like to announce a call for abstracts for the 30th AMOS National Conference, scheduled to take place from 5-9 February, 2024 in Canberra. We invite you to submit abstracts for oral presentations and posters in the session titled “Realisation of Paris Agreement pledges.

Submission Deadline: September 1, 2023

Session Description: The Paris Agreement is a commitment from all countries to substantially reduce global greenhouse gas emissions, limiting the global temperature increase in this century to 2 °C above pre-industrial levels while pursuing efforts to limit the increase even further to 1.5 °C. This session welcomes abstracts on a broad range of topics related to the Paris Agreement. This may include: emissions mitigation, negative emissions and pathways to net zero, carbon budgets, climate projections and consequences of failing to limit warming. The aim is to encourage a dialogue across research areas, including policy, impacts, observational and modelling-based studies.

Submission: Oxford Abstracts

Best regards on behalf of the session convenors,

Tammas Loughran Tilo Ziehn & Liam Cassidy

Hi ESM working group,

Another session announcement for AMOS 2024 which might be of interest to the group! Abstracts can be submitted until 1 Sep 2023.

Session 13: Southern Hemisphere extratropical variability and change: atmosphere, ocean, ice and their interactions

Keywords: Climate, Weather, Oceans, Cryosphere, Observations and modelling, Climate variability and change

Convenors: Dr Ariaan Purich, Dr Ghyslaine Boschat, Dr Wilma Huneke, Dr Zoe Gillet

Session Description:
The extratropical atmospheric circulation, Southern Ocean and sea ice have all exhibited changes over recent decades, with significant shifts in the future also projected. In this session we welcome abstracts examining climate variability and change across the Southern Hemisphere extratropics including the Southern Ocean and Antarctic regions. We welcome abstracts on individual components of the climate system and encourage those looking at their interactions, such as the influence of changes in the Southern Hemisphere atmospheric circulation on the ocean circulation and sea ice, linkages between the tropical and polar regions and responses to anthropogenic forcing, and ocean-atmosphere-sea ice feedbacks. This session aims to connect scientists across the atmosphere-ocean-ice domains and welcomes both observational and modelling perspectives.

ESM Working Group Meeting is CANCELLED

The next ESM Working Group Meeting scheduled for this Thursday the 31st has been cancelled.

If you are disappointed to miss David @dkhutch’s talk fear not! David will be giving his talk at next week’s ACCESS Community Workshop.

See you at the Workshop!
