Accessing UKMO licensed models

:warning: THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE CSIRO OR BUREAU OF METEOROLOGY EMPLOYEES (see FAQ 7)

Are you running an ACCESS-NRI supported model?

:globe_showing_asia_australia: Are you running any of these ACCESS-NRI supported models: ACCESS-AM, ACCESS-CM, ACCESS-ESM, ACCESS-rAM, or ACCESS-rCM? :globe_showing_asia_australia:

If so, you will need to hold a valid MOSRS account and agree to the Terms of Use for the new End User Licence Agreement (EULA) with the UK Met Office (UKMO) that allows ACCESS-NRI to distribute proprietary UKMO software to Australian research institutions.

ACCESS-NRI partner universities ANU, UNSW, UTas (including AAD), Monash Uni and UniMelb have recently signed an updated agreement outlining the conditions in this new EULA. Individuals affiliated with these ACCESS-NRI partner universities are now being asked to read and accept the Terms of Use for the Agreement so they can continue accessing UKMO software and documentation. If this applies to you, please complete the UKMO Licensing process by following the steps on the UKMO EULA signing page.

For verification purposes, you will need to have an ACCESS-Hive Forum account as you will be added to a forum group of verified MOSRS users. This group will be used as a dedicated channel for communication and MOSRS membership visibility. If you donโ€™t already have a MOSRS account, please tick the box to request that ACCESS-NRI apply for one on your behalf. You must have AAF Authentication on your ACCESS-Hive Forum account for verification purposes (refer to this guide to add or update AAF authentication). By completing this UKMO Licensing process, you will also be invited to the NCI project df42, which will be used to control access to UKMO licensed materials that ACCESS-NRI administer.

We ask that you please complete this by 8 May 2026 so that you can continue to use and access UKMO software and licensed material. If you encounter any problems, please send a message to the UKMO_Admin group on the ACCESS-Hive Forum.

FAQs :person_raising_hand:

1. Does the UKMO Licensing process apply to me?

All ACCESS-NRI supported models, with the exception of ACCESS-OM, use the UKMO Unified Model as the atmosphere component. If you are affiliated with one of the partner research universities (ANU, UNSW, UTas (including AAD), Monash Uni and UniMelb) and you run any of these ACCESS models: ACCESS-AM, ACCESS-CM, ACCESS-ESM, ACCESS-rAM, or ACCESS-rCM, or need to access UKMO documentation, you will need to complete this process.

2. What will happen if I forget to do this before the 8 May 2026 deadline?

You will need to complete this UKMO Licensing process to continue using ACCESS-NRI supported models that access UKMO software and/or documentation as you are currently accessing these UKMO materials under an expired licence. Note that the current workflow for obtaining access to the MOSRS Repository Mirror via membership of the NCI project ki32_mosrs will soon be superseded by this UKMO Licensing process, so it is in your best interest to complete this process as soon as possible to maintain access.

3. What is a MOSRS account?

The Met Office Science Repository Service (MOSRS) is a server run by the UKMO to support collaborative development with other partner organisations. MOSRS contains the source code for some ACCESS model components and configurations, and a MOSRS account is a licence requirement to run some ACCESS model configurations. This is the case even if you do not directly access the protected source code, e.g., when using pre-compiled binaries.

4. What if I do not already have a MOSRS account?

You can apply for a MOSRS account by following the steps in the UKMO EULA signing page and selecting the option that requests ACCESS-NRI to apply for a MOSRS account on your behalf.

5. What are the requirements before signing the agreement?

You need to be currently affiliated with ANU, UNSW, UTas (includes AAD), Monash Uni or UniMelb. This will be verified with Australian Access Federation (AAF) before signing. You also need to have an ACCESS-Hive Forum account, which you can sign up for here if you donโ€™t already have one. You must have AAF Authentication on your ACCESS-Hive Forum account for verification purposes (refer to this guide to add or update AAF authentication).

6. What can I expect after signing the agreement?

Once signing the agreement for individual users, you will be added to the UKMO-licence ACCESS-Hive Forum group. This is a dedicated channel for general communication and membership visibility for verified users. You will also receive an email invitation to join the NCI project df42, that you need to accept. This will give you access to UKMO proprietary software, provided by ACCESS-NRI, on Gadi.
If you have requested ACCESS-NRI to apply for a MOSRS account on your behalf, this usually takes 2-5 business days to process. Once you have a MOSRS account, you can access UKMO software and documentation on the UKMO Trac server.

7. Does the UKMO Licensing also apply to users from CSIRO and BoM?

No, the new EULA does not apply to users affiliated with the Bureau of Meteorology or CSIRO. Those users are already covered by a different agreement and no further action is required at this time.

8. Can users from non-partner Australian research institutions access UKMO software and documentation?

Not currently. If your institution is interested, please contact ACCESS-NRI UKMO_Admin group for information on how to establish an agreement with us to access UKMO material.

9. Will I still need a MOSRS account with the UKMO migration to GitHub?

The UKMO is in the process of moving codebases, tools, and scientific workflows from MOSRS to GitHub. You will still need a MOSRS account during this transition period as many systems and workflows are still partly tied to MOSRS. Even post-migration, you might still need access to MOSRS if: some legacy components havenโ€™t been migrated yet; you need historical data or old branches; or certain restricted/licensed code hasnโ€™t been moved.
