CSIRO - ACCESS-NRI standup minutes

Date: September 30, 2025

Participants: @Jhan, @MartinDix, @clairecarouge, @tiloz, @spencerwong, @Aidan, @dougiesquire, @manodeep, @inh599, @sofarrell, @harshula, @paulleopardi
Minutes: @spencerwong

Update on new spinup simulations

  • @Jhan is running two new spinups in parallel. These include all the priority 0 changes from the coordination table, including CICE5, water balance changes, oneAPI, new vegetation distribution and new PFTs.
  • Both simulations are using the same configuration with the 0.92 ocean albedo scaling. Aicenmin has been reset to puny and a new estimate for the add_lprec parameter is being used.
  • Both simulations show improvements in the global ocean temperature drift
  • We don’t plan to have any more answer changing code updates unless testing shows that they are necessary.

Further work

  • Ozone and nitrogen forcings will be updated in future. @paulleopardi, @MartinDix and @spencerwong to meet to discuss how to produce a new ozone ancillary.
  • Other configurations (e.g. emissions driven, 1pct CO2, 4xCO2) to be brought up to date – however we won’t run new tests with these until we have a more stable starting point.
  • @MartinDix, @paulleopardi, @spencerwong to set up an initial historical simulation using CMIP6 ozone. @inh599 notes that wood harvest may need to be updated to work with the Australian PFTs.
  • Output names and metadata: @inh599 notes that it’s a good time to make sure that all output names, units etc that appear in the output file are correct. @Jhan is working on changes to the STASHmaster, however changes to um2nc will be needed for updating the postprocessed netCDF files. @MartinDix to share the um2nc ticket.
  • @spencerwong to update the netCDF conversion to remove the extra netCDF directory level. This should be incorporated between the current spinups and the official PI control run.
  • @Aidan is working on adding metadata to model outputs.
  • Configuration documentation also needs to be written

Changes to standup meetings

  • With the code in its final iteration, it’s less crucial for everyone to attend the meetings every week. Feel free to skip meetings if you think the discussion won’t be relevant to you.
