CSIRO and ACCESS-NRI have developed, configured and ran the ESM1.6 spin-up experiments for the upcoming cmip7 contribution.
This thread is intended to document the exact model executables and forcings used for the esm1.6 spin-up experiments (previous example). In particular, changes to the executables, bug corrections and updates can also be documented here.

At restart 352, we replaced the ALK, DIC, NO3 and O2 tracers with their values from depth indices 15:50 with those from the restart file located here: /g/data/vk83/prerelease/configurations/inputs/access-esm1p6/modern/pre-industrial/restart/2024.12.10/ocean

At restart 666, we increased the scavenging of iron onto particles by an order of magnitude from kscav_dfe = 0.0001 to kscav_dfe = 0.001. This was done in the hope that excess Fe building in the ocean interior will be removed.

At restart 678, we increased the remineralisation rate coefficient (detlrem) from 0.4 to 0.5 (by 25%) to maintain more organics in the upper ocean, elevate productivity, but also reduce deoxygenation in the deep. This may not be enough, but just trying it right now.

Using restart from Pearse’s long run at year 902, April spin-up conducted by Jhan, we reset the deep ocean concentrations of Alk, DIC, NO3, O2, and Fe tracers. Specifically, these were from depth levels 15:50, and they were reset to their original fields in /g/data/vk83/prerelease/configurations/inputs/access-esm1p6/modern/pre-industrial/restart/2024.12.10/ocean/ocean_wombatlite.res.nc

Following above run: altered the parameters for the BGC model (WOMBAT-lite). We turned off burial of tracers and updated the parameter set. Parameters updated to new values in ocean_field table to match Pearse’s long run (above)

Brief description:
The JuneSpinUp consolidates all of the ad-hoc changes brought into AprilSpinUp format least 100 years. These are mainly updates to the ocean and WOMBAT parameters. The executable is update to correspond with reading an updated phenology file for CASA-CNP. Note: JuneSpinUp has been started from restarts corresponding to year 1092 of the AprilSpinUp. Note however that the directory names will start from “000” again, i.e. output000. Note: additional outputs (3D variables on pressure levels on a daily timestep) provided from output127 onwards,

Brief description:
We have three versions of the September Spin Up. All versions use the revised scaling factor for ocean albedo of 0.92. All versions use a revised parametrization describing Australian PFTs. In version C, test-PIspinup-Sept-C is restarted from year 402 coming from the AprilSpinUp (restart 300). The reason for starting earlier in the run is that by year 600 of AprilSpinUp (where Sept-A begins), 500 after the solar constant change, the region in the Southern Ocean has already cooled down considerably and is already spilling water into the excessively cold water of deep ocean in the rest of the model (ocean timescale to reverse this is long). This suggests we restart the model from an even earlier time. However there is a significant step change in ocean dynamics due to a revision to ocean BGC at approximately year 280(experiment counter=382). This suggests we start after this has occurred. As such the decision was made to start from restart300(experiment counter=402), 200 years earlier that Sept-A.

This is a continuation of Sept-B spinup with a new executable. The executable contains a bug fix in UM7 for the land carbon fluxes. This was started as a test configuration to investigate the bug. But was kept in the final spinup.
Further Notes:
This was technically based on the test-PIspinup-Sept-C config, however the only difference between A,B and C was the defined restart. This GPP-13 test includes yet another restart. As it was initially a test the output data was not backed up and has sin ce been lost. The Oct-B spinup used a restart from this run (@ year 080).
