Experiment Proposal: CABLE-POP for Demography BENchmarking Project

Experiment title :bell:: CABLE-POP for D-BEN

Summary :bell::

The CABLE-POP contribution to the Demography BENchmarking (D-BEN) land model intercomparison project led by European team as part of the AI4PEX project.

Scientific motivation:

To benchmark the CABLE-POP forest demography model against global datasets and other models. To identify where CABLE-POP is performing well and where things need to improve.

Experiment Name :bell:: CABLE-POP for D-BEN
People :bell:: Alexander Norton (CSIRO), Juergen Knauer (UTS)
Model: CABLE-POP-TRENDY
Configuration: CABLE-POP_TRENDY (TRENDYv14)
Initial conditions: Full spinup based on TRENDY protocol using constant CO2 concentration and N deposition as well as recycled climate (1901-1920). Starting from zero biomass.
Run plan: First experimental runs in May 2026, followed by the two main runs in June 2026
Simulation details: Two main simulations: one with potential natural vegetation (aiming to represent a mature, old-growth forest) and one with β€˜real-world’ vegetation, including effects of land use change.
Total KSUs required :bell:: 30-50
Total storage required :bell:: ~400GB (may be less once properly post-processed)
Outputs: CABLE outputs and POP outputs (selected variables only)
Restarts: TBD
