Local topographic roughness plays crucial role in determining the properties of basal ice

This is a nice short write-up of the two papers listed at the bottom.

The takeaway message is that the small scale roughness of the topography has a critical effect on the properties of the basal ice, i.e. adjacent to the topography, which in turn is very important in understanding and modelling the mobility of the ice sheet itself.
