Dark Oceanography: a musical performance that integrates ocean science with experimental music
Navid Constantinou, Kate Milligan, Louise Devenish, and Aaron Wyatt
Have you ever heard an ocean eddy? Dark Oceanography integrates climate science with experimental music, modelling generative oceanic systems of mesoscale eddies in spatial audio and percussion. An interdisciplinary collaboration between The Sound Collectors Lab at the School of Music and Performance at Monash University and the ARC Centre of Excellence for Weather of the 21st Century. In this work, the live performances of three percussionists converge with multi-channel spatialised electronic sound, creating a dynamic spatial instrument that sonifies the future impact of global warming in the ocean by submerging the audience in sound. We used Lagrangian tracking data obtained from daily ocean model output from the ACCESS-OM2 model at eddy-resolving resolution (0.10แต). Following the pathways of eddies from the Eastern Australian Current through the Southern Ocean and across the globe, model output informing this musical work is drawn from the location of each performance, foregrounding local knowledge and experiences of ocean climate change. So, sit back and let us try to immerse you in the sounds of the ocean.
