ACCESS-ESM1.5 with prescribed ocean

Hi, I’m looking into using ACCESS-ESM1.5 to perform experiments but with a prescribed ocean boundary conditions (the reason for using ESM instead of AM is just that I’ve found more documentation for running ESM and it looks relatively simple with payu; also because it’s cheaper than CM, but I’m open to discussion).

Is this possible/easy?

Hi Elio,

Thanks for the message. It sounds like you are interested in something similar to what is described here but in the other direction?

I’ll get in touch with the atmosphere team and they can let you know if this kind of thing is inscope for “official” ACCESS-NRI support (of course, community folks might be able to help in any case).

Hi Elio

ACCESS-NRI don’t support or have plans to release this older version of the UM (7.3) as a supported ACCESS-AM product. There may be or have previously been at atmosphere only configuration in the user communities.

ESM1.5 is already very cheap to run (relatively) - would this work for your experiments?

Thanks anton. Yes, ESM1.5 is fine. I guess the question is whether it is possible to prescribe SSTs instead of just nudging them.

Hi @eliocamp,

We currently have an in development AMIP configuration for ESM1.5 located here which uses prescribed historical SSTs and sea ice. This is based on setup used for the ESM1.5 AMIP experiments for CMIP6.

All of the required inputs and settings are currently in this configuration, and it can be run in the same way as the other ESM1.5 payu configurations. We haven’t properly tested this configuration yet however, which is why there isn’t yet have a supported release.

Thanks! If it hasn’t been tested yet I will wait to use it then. I will use the nudge version and maybe try the AMIP configuration when released.
