At the recent ocean team workshop we’re curating a list of datasets that will be used by many people in the community and be available using ESMvaltool/re-gridded to om3 grids for easy comparison.
We’d like feedback on the best/most up to date datasets.
We now have (updated 21st Jan 2024 based on comments – below):
- ERSST v4 (SST comparisons)
- SSH the most updated DUACS version is here: Global Ocean Gridded L 4 Sea Surface Heights And Derived Variables Reprocessed 1993 Ongoing | Copernicus Marine Service . It covers the ice-covered Arctic and rest of open ocean (1993-2023). For the ice-covered southern Ocean there is this regional dataset Antarctic - Sea Level Heights which covers the whole southern ocean, including ice-covered and open ocean parts from 2013-2021. (a 2002-2021 version should be published this year.)
- WOA2023 (T and S comparisons). Already on Gadi (/g/data/ik11/observations/woa23)
- EN4: Met Office Hadley Centre observations datasets IAP: http://www.ocean.iap.ac.cn/pages/dataService/dataService.html These datasets have monthly historical T and S from the 1950s onwards, using different mapping methods and input profiles/corrections, so it is good to have the diversity of gridded products for analysis
- NSIDC CDR v5 (sea ice concentration). NOAA/NSIDC Climate Data Record of Passive Microwave Sea Ice Concentration, Version 5 | National Snow and Ice Data Center
- NSIDC sea ice index v3 (area and extent). Sea Ice Index, Version 3 | National Snow and Ice Data Center
- Tropical Atmosphere Ocean data. Want: subsurface temperature, fixed depth currents, subsurface salinity. data. Related: Forum post
- Chlorophyll. Sauzede et al., 2016 JGR Oceans
Perhaps @RyanHolmes, @Pearse, @Matthis_Auger, others might have some suggestions?
@taimoorsohail and @schmidt-christina in Hobart recently, we talked about T/S alternatives?
