ACCESS-OM3 evaluation

At the recent ocean team workshop we’re curating a list of datasets that will be used by many people in the community and be available using ESMvaltool/re-gridded to om3 grids for easy comparison.

We’d like feedback on the best/most up to date datasets.

We now have (updated 21st Jan 2024 based on comments – below):

Perhaps @RyanHolmes, @Pearse, @Matthis_Auger, others might have some suggestions?

@taimoorsohail and @schmidt-christina in Hobart recently, we talked about T/S alternatives?

I would recommend both EN4 and IAP gridded datasets for observations. EN4: https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/hadobs/en4/ IAP: http://www.ocean.iap.ac.cn/pages/dataService/dataService.html These datasets have monthly historical T and S from the 1950s onwards, using different mapping methods and input profiles/corrections, so it is good to have the diversity of gridded products for analysis.

Version 5 of the NSIDC CDR product has been released and will be the one to use - https://nsidc.org/data/g02202/versions/5

Sorry I missed that! For SSH the most updated DUACS version is here: https://data.marine.copernicus.eu/product/SEALEVEL_GLO_PHY_L4_MY_008_047/description . It covers the ice-covered Arctic and rest of open ocean (1993-2023). For the ice-covered southern Ocean there is this regional dataset https://www.aviso.altimetry.fr/en/data/products/sea-surface-height-products/regional/antarctic-sea-level-heights.html which covers the whole southern ocean, including ice-covered and open ocean parts from 2013-2021. (a 2002-2021 version should be published this year.)

thanks very much @taimoorsohail @anton @Matthis_Auger, I've passed this along and updated the list above with your suggestions / comments.
