Cryosphere Working Group Announce

Hi all,

Our next CMWG meeting will be held next Wednesday 6th Aug from 10:30-11:15 am Melbourne/Canberra/Hobart time (AEST). We only have a seminar on the agenda:

  • Seminar by Asst. Prof. Ching-Yao Lai (Stanford University) 10:30-11:15 am

Title: Deep learning the flow law of Antarctic ice shelves

Abstract:

Can AI help uncover unknown physical laws from vast amounts of Earth data? In this talk I will discuss data-driven exploration of the constitutive law (i.e. flow law) of ice shelves using physics-informed deep learning and remote-sensing observations (Wang, Lai, Prior, Cowen-Breen, Science (2025)). The constitutive law of ice directly governs the dynamics of land ice but is challenging to measure in the field. Here, with physics-informed deep learning and remote-sensing observations, we identify constitutive models that differ from those previously assumed in ice-sheet models. Our results suggest the need to reassess the impact of ice flow laws on the future projection of sea-level rise.

Hello all,

We are looking for speakers to give talks for the Cryosphere Modelling Working Group meeting on Friday 12th September, as part of the ACCESS Community Workshop (see more details here: ACCESS Community Workshop 2025: Melbourne, 8–12 September - ACCESS-NRI ).

If you have something new to share – modelling, observations, theory development, cool new tools or data products – related to the cryosphere, we’d love to hear from you!

Talks and a poster session will be scheduled for the morning – 8:30-11 – followed by a CMWG general meeting, lunch, then an ISSM / pyISSM tutorial.

Please get in touch via email with Mike, Lenneke, Chen, or myself if you would like to present or want to find out more.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Cheerio,
Felicity

Dear CMWG,

A quick note to let you all know that application window for the below position has been extended by 1 week - so applications now close on Tuesday 26 August, 11:55 AEST.

Please spread the word and get in contact with either Felicity McCormack or myself for more information.

Have a great weekend!

We have recently opened a job advert for a 3-year Research Fellow position based at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. The role is to couple the Ice-sheet and Sea-level System Model (ISSM) with the ACCESS-AM3 atmosphere model.

The position description and application information can be found here: Job Search - Jobs at Monash .

I’d be grateful if you were able to forward this to anyone you might think would be interested in applying.

Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Best regards,

Introduction to ISSM / PyISSM Workshop

This information is for all those intending to attend the Introduction to ISSM/pyISSM Workshop as part of the Cryosphere Working Group meeting at the ACCESS-NRI Workshop 2025 on September 12, 2025.

:books: Workshop Resources

All resources for the workshop are now available in this repository. We have included detailed instructions for getting started here.

:red_exclamation_mark:Pre-workshop preparation

To get the most from the workshop, there are a few steps to complete ahead of time:

  • NCI Account - This workshop has been designed to operate on the Australian Research Environment (ARE), a web-based graphical interface for performing computational research on the National Computational Infrastructure (NCI) Gadi supercomputer. In order to access ARE, you will require an NCI account. If you do not have an NCI account, you can sign up here.

  • NCI Project Membership - To run the exercises you will require access to two specific projects on Gadi:

Please request to join these projects at least 1-2 days before the workshop to allow for your request to be approved.

:rocket: Getting started

If you’d like to get started ahead of the workshop, we invite you to work through the instructions here, starting at Step 0.

During the workshop, we will walk through Step 1 and Step 2. You will then be able to work through the tutorials at your own pace, with ACCESS-NRI staff on-hand to answer any questions or help troubleshoot any issues.

:waving_hand: See you there

We’re excited to see you all there on September 12, 2025. The ISSM/pyISSM introduction hands-on session will begin at 11:30 in Room M03.
