Hi and welcome to the Atmosphere community!

This space is for you to reach out and connect with others in the Atmosphere community. Please introduce yourself including a brief description of what you work on.

I will start:

I’m Heidi, the Team Lead of Atmospheric Modelling Infrastructure for ACCESS-NRI. I am also the ACCESS-NRI liason for this Atmosphere Working Group and am keen to help build a more cohesive atmospheric community by assisting our co-chairs to run Working Group meetings and events.

I’m Matt, a user of and contributor to the UM, and especially the UKCA chemistry framework within the UM.
I’m also a Co-Chair of the ACCESS-NRI Atmosphere Working Group, and in that role look forward to stimulating the community discussion around the atmospheric model that we all wrestle with.

Hi everyone,

I am Christian Jakob. I used to be an atmospheric modeller developing parametrizations for clouds and convection for weather and climate models. I work at Monash University, where I have been working as an Academic since 2007. I have now taken on the role as the Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for the Weather of the 21st Century, which has been awarded in the 2023 round. In this Centre we have an interest in developing very high-resolution global and regional models, including for the atmosphere.

Hi everyone,

I’m Yi Huang, a Senior Lecturer in Climate Science at the University of Melbourne. I’m also a Co-Chair of the ACCESS-NRI Atmosphere Working Group.

My head’s in the clouds! My research seeks to understand how clouds form, how storms develop, how rain and snow are generated, and how these processes affect and are affected by climate change. I use a variety of observations and atmospheric models in unison to investigate these important processes.

I’m really looking forward to building a vibrant atmospheric community with all of you!

My name is Holger, I’ve been with the Computational Modelling Systems team of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate System Science and now for Climate Extremes for several years, and have helped scientists run especially the atmospheric component of the ACCESS model.

My background is in Physics, with a PhD in Quantum Atom Optics from Swinburne University.

Hi all, I’m Charmaine and a co-chair of this Atmosphere Working Group.

I lead the Atmospheric Modelling Team in the Research Program at the Bureau of Meteorology. We develop the Bureau’s regional high-resolution atmospheric modelling systems to support improved prediction on weather and climate timescales. My personal research interests are on understanding and improving the representation of clouds and precipitation in the UM. Currently this is in km and sub-km scale models, but I was also one of the model developers of the ACCESS1.3 atmospheric model, which is used in ACCESS-ESM1.5.

I’m excited to join you as part this national community of atmospheric modelling researchers.

Hi All,

I’m Zhangcheng Pei, a PhD student at Australian Antarctic Program Partnership, Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies, University of Tasmania.

My PhD project aims to run the regional high-resolution UM model over the Antarctica, evaluating and improving the model’s capacity to represent mixed-phase clouds and precipitation against latest ground-based observations. Specific focus will be put on involving the newly developed cloud microphysics scheme: CASIM and the cloud fraction scheme: Bimodal.

Really excited to join this fantastic atmospheric community and expect to have some nice discussions!

Hi everyone. I am Abhnil Prasad (Abhi), a senior research fellow at the University of New South Wales working at the Climate Change Research Center. My research is focused on climate modelling using a mix of models and observations. I also have been working on convective parametrizations in models to improve the diurnal cycle of rainfall.

I am excited to join and contribute to the Atmosphere Working Group!

Hi all, I am Marty Singh. I work at Monash University, primarily on idealised modeling of the atmosphere at both convection resolving and global scales. I often use models that are stripped down version of “CMIP” style models, which allow for transparent tinkering. I am very excited to see how the NRI might help perform the kinds of experiments that I do using ACCESS.

Hi everyone! I’m Davide Marchegiani, a Research Software Engineer in the atmospheric development team at ACCESS-NRI and former PhD student at Monash University.
I will be contributing to the building of tools for the ACCESS community and to help users have a better approach to ACCESS models, especially to its atmospheric components.

Hi all, I’m Bethan. I’m a model developer at the Bureau of Meteorology, where I am currently thinking about ways to parameterize the unresolved effects of sub-grid clouds and convection on rainfall and circulation in global models. I came to the Bureau not too long ago from an academic background, where I made extensive use of high resolution (km and sub-km grid lengths) regional and idealised modelling, as well as observations of rainfall, to investigate aspects of deep convection, convective microphysics, and extreme rain events.

I’ve spent a lot of time with my hands deep inside model physics code, particularly cloud microphysics schemes. If that experience is useful to anyone here, please reach out!

Hi everyone,

I’m Zhaohui Wang. I’m an atmospheric modeller who currently works at the Coupled Climate Modelling team within CSIRO. I recently joined the CSIRO from last month and is currently engaged in research on ACCESS climate model applications (ACCESS-CM2/ESM1.5), with a particular focus on atmospheric components and their interactions with land-surface and chemistry. Prior to his current role, I completed my PhD in 2022 at the University of Tasmania in Hobart, where I conducted research on the interactions between the atmosphere and Antarctic sea-ice using Polar WRF models. As an atmosphere modeller at CSIRO Aspendale, I believe I will tightly collaborate with ACCESS-NRI Atmospheric Modelling Working Group for a better ACCESS model! :grinning:

Hi All, I’m James Risbey. I work on climate variability with a focus on weather and extremes. I’m part of the Climate Variability & Hazards team at CSIRO. I am also part of the Australian Climate Service and Wx21 Centre for Excellence. I am particularly interested in weather extremes in observations and large forecast ensembles, and on evaluation of synoptic and large scale processes in the atmosphere in weather and climate models.

Hello!
I’m Sonya, a postdoc at UTAS, sitting at IMAS and a part of the Australian Antarctic Program Partnership. I currently run ACCESS-AM2 both with and without chemistry, as well as the UM regional model. I use these models to explore cloud, radiation and aerosol properties and model biases over the Southern Ocean. I’m also interested in how we can use machine learning to evaluate and test models.

I’m new to the group, I’ve just come off a very long stint of parental leave. I’m Sarah Perkins-Kirkpatrick, a CI in CLEX, a Deputy Director in the up and coming Centre of Excellence for the Weather of the 21st Century, and an Associate Professor at UNSW Canberra. My background is in researching climate extremes/detection and attribution, so I’m not a modeller, but I’m keen to have some input into what will be produced by the model.

Hi everybody, I am a professor at the UNSW Climate Change Research Centre with longstanding interests in atmospheric processes particularly related to moist convection and clouds. Current interest is in learning how to model/parameterize small-scale processes better in global models, leveraging fine-scale modelling strategies and machine learning. Am a CI in CLEx and the up-coming W21C Centre.

Hello!

I am a PostDoc at Monash University and CleX within the Modelling Research Program. I am working with the ACCESS model to run some AMIP style simulations with a focus of running Higher Resolution simulations. I am primarily interested in extreme precipitation and convection processes and what models with different hierarchies can tell us about them.

Excited to be here and learn!

Hi all,
very late to the HIVE - so a quick intro from me. I am an A/Prof in atmospheric chemistry at the University of Melbourne. I am interested in all chemicals reactive and toxic mainly - so more ozone, aerosols and their precursors etc than the greenhouse gases (though I do find methane and N2O pretty interesting too…). I have contributed to coupled chemistry climate model efforts for Australia, which have made contributions to the WMO/UNEP ozone assessment, a reporting requirement under the Montreal protocol (much like IPCC reports are under the UNFCCC).
