Ocean equivalent for new ACCESS Regional Model Datasets

Hi all,
New high-resolution regional atmospheric models are available for Australia (NCI Data Catalogue - NCI Data Catalogue). Does anyone know if an ocean model version will be coming, and if so, any idea on timeline?

I am writing a DECRA26 proposal focused on the Ningaloo region. I’m proposing to do some Lagrangian particle tracking+productivity model runs, which could be run using an existing ocean model output. I need to figure out whether any high-resolution (~1 or 2 km ideally) ocean model runs exist around the area or could be repurposed. This is all relatively new to me so if you have any advice I’d appreciate it!

Cheers,
Tamara

Hi Tamara,

I’m not aware of any existing COSIMA runs at that resolution in that area, but maybe someone else will chime in. @ellepola has been doing some regional MOM6 NW Shelf runs, perhaps that’s of interest.

Otherwise it would definitely be feasible to say you will set up your own regional ACCESS-OM3 config in that area. @helen is working on that at the moment and it should be an easy process to set up your own OM3 config hopefully by next year.

Thanks Adele!

My regional MOM6 domain covers an area between the latitudes -9 to -27 and longitudes 100 to 140. Ningaloo area is covered in that domain. model resolution is 0.018 degrees (nearly 2 km). My data is available for the year 2023.

Hi @TamaraSchlosser

There are Australian-wide regional mom ideas that are in the scoping stage, so no timeline as of yet unfortunately.

Seconding @adele157, chatting to other regional modellers such as @ellepola who are already working in this region would be a good way to collaborate and build off existing work in the region.

In addition to @ellepola - Jessica Benthuysen, Matt Rayson and Ivica Janekovic spring to mind as good regional modellers working in this area that you can chat to.

If the community does not have something suitable, then it would also be possible for you to setup a regional mom configuration for the region and I am happy to chat more about this. I would still also advise chatting to some of the local modeller for that region as they will have good local knowledge and suggestion on how best to capture the local dynamics.

Sounds like an exciting proposal – best of luck!

Great thank you @helen and @ellepola for your help! I won’t know if I get funded for quite some time but fingers crossed you’ll be hearing from me a year from now
