Andrew Kiss: Development and evaluation of the new ACCESS-OM3 global ocean - sea ice modelling suite

Andrew Kiss: Development and evaluation of the new ACCESS-OM3 global ocean - sea ice modelling suite.

Much of Australia’s large-scale ocean modelling community relies on COSIMA’s ACCESS-OM2 model suite, which has underpinned over 120 papers since 2019. We present here an update on the development of its successor, ACCESS-OM3, which is being developed by ACCESS-NRI and COSIMA and is also the ocean and sea ice component of the new ACCESS-CM3 climate model.

All components of ACCESS-OM3 have been significantly upgraded to the state of the art (MOM6 ocean, CICE6 sea ice, optional WW3 surface waves, and optional WOMBATlite biogeochemistry) and are continually kept up to date with the latest available versions. Global configurations have been released at resolutions of 100km and 25km, with 8km configurations in development; a relocatable regional modelling capability is also available. These new configurations include updated parameterisations, inputs and forcings, and capabilities such as sub-ice-shelf circulation and wave - sea ice interaction.

We will present an overview and update of development progress, and the results of assessments of model fidelity being undertaken by the COSIMA community. This presentation will be of interest to physical and biogeochemical oceanographers, sea ice and wave scientists, and ACCESS-OM2 and ACCESS-OM3 users.
