Experiment proposal: ACCESS-CM2-025 piControl

Experiment proposal for compute and storage on lg87.

Experiment title: ACCESS-CM2-025 piControl

Description: Run a piControl simulation with ACCESS-CM2 at 0.25° ocean resolution. Use simulation as (i) control run for perturbation experiments and (ii) for comparison with other models.

Run plan: 250 years (200 yr spin-up + 50 yr control) - subject to change if spin-up takes longer/shorter

Total kSU required: 250 yr x 12.5 kSU = 3.125 MSU (0.5 MSU from lg87, remainder to come from other projects)

Total storage requirement: approximately 10 TB, to be saved on lg87 to allow the ESM community to access the data. See this post for a discussion on requested output.

Hi @wghuneke ,
I believe we have available compute time this quarter, so your plan to use 500 KSU sounds good to me.
Also the storage sounds reasonable, with the usual caveat that we need to also think about the long-term destination for storage once the project is finished.
Tagging a few other co-chairs here just to be sure. @tiloz @ShayneM @eunpalim @spencerwong

David

Consider creating an intake catalogue to help with this. Let us know if you need assistance with that.

I assume the atmosphere data will be post-processed into compressed netCDF?

Hi @wghuneke, that plan sounds good to me.

Cheers,
Spencer

I will create an intake catalogue for the output, yes.

I had some issues when creating the catalogue for the existing present-day run and am aiming to write out the ocean data in a more intake-friendly way. The atm output is available as netCDF - I believe the file structure is ok and wasn’t the issue.

It would be good to know what the issues were and your planned fixes, as we’re sorting the output for the CMIP7 fast-track, and it would be good to know if there is anything we’re missing.

Hi @dkhutch and @wghuneke,
I agree that these experiments sound like a good use of our resources.
