ESM Working Group Announce

Hi climate enthusiasts,

A reminder to submit an abstract to the NRI workshop (10-12 Sep) and ESM WG meeting (on 12 Sep) in Melbourne. You only need to submit a single abstract, see more information here. Any presentations on the coupled climate system (models and observations) are welcome.

Looking forward to seeing you in September,
Wilma

ESM Working Group Meeting is CANCELLED

The ESM Working Group Meeting scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday the 19th of June (2025-06-19T03:00:00Z) is cancelled.

The next meeting is scheduled for the 3rd of July (2025-07-03T03:00:00Z) and we currently have no speaker!

If you have something to present, or know someone else who would be happy to present for 10-20 minutes please get in touch with @Aidan, @spencerwong or any of the co-chairs: @eunpalim, @dkhutch, @tiloz, @ShayneM.

See you in 2 weeks!

– From the ACCESS Community workshop committee –

Are you a student or Early Career Researcher interested in climate and weather science and modelling?

Join us at the 2025 ACCESS Community Workshop! Connect with other researchers using the same models and tools as you and discover new software tools that could transform your research!

The ACCESS Community Workshop will take place 8-12 September 2025 in Melbourne and we are welcoming students and Early Career Researchers (ECRs) to contribute and attend. The Workshop takes place over 4 days: 2 days of presentations, 1 training day, and 1 day devoted to specific domain working groups (Land Surface, Machine learning for Climate and Weather, Atmosphere, Ocean and Sea ice, Cryosphere and Earth System modeling). Scholarships are available to support ECR/student travel and attendance via the abstract submission.

Who is the ACCESS community?

If your work uses ACCESS models - be that developing models, running models, or analysing model output, then you are part of the ACCESS community! We also welcome researchers using other climate models or considering using ACCESS models to be involved.

This event is hosted by Australia’s climate simulator (ACCESS-NRI), which provides the software engineering expertise to create open-source models, data and tools in collaboration with Australian research communities.

What’s in it for you?

  • Learn about Australia’s ACCESS climate models and tools you might use within your own research
  • Learn about the broad range of exciting science being done with ACCESS models
  • Connect with other climate and weather researchers who get it - who encounter similar technical hurdles and triumphs in their research
  • Attend the dedicated student/ECR social event where you can swap coding stories, make new friends, or simply unwind with people who understand what you’re working on
  • Talk to ACCESS-NRI staff – the research software engineers who co-develop, maintain and improve the software infrastructure – in person, so you know who to contact for modelling help in the future
  • Attend hands-on training opportunities on the use of ACCESS models and outputs, as well as other skills including handling large datasets, model evaluation tools, machine learning in climate models, and advanced Git and GitHub – all skills valued by research institutions, industry, and government agencies
  • Present your work - if you have a talk or poster from a previous occasion, bring it along to expose your research to a wider audience

Ready to advance your climate and weather research? Don’t miss this opportunity and apply now!

Visit https://www.access-nri.org.au/access-community-workshop-2025/ to submit your abstract and apply for a scholarship.

  • Abstract submissions for oral presentations close 22 June Submit an abstract
  • Poster submissions (with 1-minute lightning talks) close 20 July

Next steps for the CM3 Dev-Eval Working group

Following lots of recent discussion (1 and 2), we’ve got a few things to share.

Moving the ESM working group meeting time

We’re looking to move the meeting time for the ESM working group meetings to accommodate attendance of ACCESS-NRI staff. Please fill out this poll and share with anyone interested.

The next ESM working group meeting is 23rd October, feel free to bring your ideas and questions on the below. Two weeks following that will be our first CM3 Dev-Eval Working group meetingwhere the exact date/time will be determined by the poll (w/c 3rd November).

Next steps for the structuring of the CM3 Dev-Eval Working group meetings

The plan for the monthly CM3 dev-eval meeting is as follows. Before each meeting, we’ll create a placeholder post here where participants are welcome to post:

  1. discussion items;

  2. links to GitHub issues in the CM3 evaluation repository that contain Figures;

  3. figures or analysis that can then be discussed at the meeting.

The post will be a “wiki” post meaning anyone with a forum account can edit it (changes are tracked). During the meeting, the post will be updated by a note taker such that the post forms the minutes for the meeting.

In short, in order of complexity, anyone is welcome to:

  1. come to the dev meeting and share ideas;
  2. suggest an agenda item for discussion (forum);
  3. post a figure in the agenda (forum);
  4. post the code on GitHub and post the Figure in an issue (see training below).

After the meeting, the same topic will be used for both sharing of “slides” and minutes for meetings.

How do I stay in the loop for CM3 evaluation?

All major meeting announcements will be made through this thread. So feel free to select “watching” to get email announcements for updates.

If you’d like more detailed announcements, subscribe to these two threads too:

  1. CM3 Dev-Eval Working group: Meeting minutes 2025
  2. Planning meeting: CM3 evaluation through ESM working group

How do I get started now? Training this afternoon!

We’ve set up a ACCESS-Community-Hub/access-cm3-paper-1 as a platform for doing evaluation/model development, everyone is welcome to get involved. There’s a template here and see README for details. Following @ongqingyee’s feedback, we’re running some training. All welcome:
