In 2026 we’ll be continuing the alternating schedule between the ESM Working Group meetings focused on science presentations and community updates, and the CM3 Dev-Eval meetings focused on community evaluation of the in-development ACCESS-CM3 model.
Both types of meetings will fully transition to the new Tuesday 10:30am AEDT time slot, and we’ll alternate between the two types of meetings on a fortnightly schedule.
The first meeting of 2026 will be a CM3 Dev-Eval meeting on Tuesday 20 January at 10:30am AEDT. If you have made any figures that you would like to discuss, please add them to the meeting agenda here!
This is a reminder that the next CM3 Dev-Eval meeting will be held Tuesday 20 January 2026 at 10:30 AM AEDT Zoom Meeting Link.
The aim of the CM3 Dev-Eval meetings is to involve community in ACCESS-CM3’s development and evaluation, leveraging community expertise to more deeply evaluate the model and find areas for improvement. Each meeting’s discussion will centre around figures and analysis provided by attendees. If you have any figures or analysis you would like to share, please add them to the wiki post here.
Everyone is welcome to join and contribute to the meetings!

Self-nominations for the ACCESS-NRI Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC)
The ACCESS-NRI Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) is changing the way it operates, and we are now inviting self-nominations for new members. We encourage applications from across the ACCESS Community. We are seeking a diverse committee that includes representatives from each of the ACCESS Community Working Groups (CWGs), as well as members from different career stages and areas of research, technical or infrastructure expertise.
We are also seeking your recommendations for potential international members to join our SAC. Please send their details (name, organisation and email and a brief rationale for why you’re recommending them) to access.nri@anu.edu.au
Science presentations: Consider contacting the co-chairs or @spencerwong if you have any work you would like to present in meetings next year. Please consider presenting, even work in progress that you’d like some feedback on.
There appears to be a bug in the events widget which only affects events occurring on the 3rd of February! Please ignore the header suggesting that the ESM WG meeting was held one day ago:

Hi Shayne, Spencer,
I just looked again this morning and yes, the same calendar I mentioned yesterday is now showing up as Tuesday meetings. So, perhaps the system just took some time to adjust the online updates because I haven’t done anything in the meantime.
Thank you for updating this Spencer!
Regards,
David
We have a new CM3 run up and ready for you all to analyse! /g/data/zv30/non-cmip/ACCESS-CM3/cm3-run-20-01-2026-om3-update/cm3-datastore/cm3-datastore.json
This is a reminder that the next CM3 development and evaluation meeting will be held Tuesday 3 March 2026 at 10:30 AM AEDT.
These meetings focus on community analysis of CM3 development simulations, with members providing expertise to evaluate the model’s performance and find areas for improvement. Community input invited: ACCESS-NRI Annual Work Plan (FY2026-27)
Dear ACCESS Community,
ACCESS-NRI is commencing its planning cycle to develop our next Annual Work Plan (FY2026-27), and we are keen to involve the community more closely in this process.
This year, we are introducing multiple opportunities for community input as the work plan is developed and refined. Feedback will be sought at three key stages, allowing ideas and priorities to be shared early, and reviewed as the plan takes shape.
Key dates for community input and feedback
5 February – 16 March
Online form opens to collect early input and feedback to inform drafting of the new work plan.
April
Community feedback on the initial draft of the work plan.
Mid-late May
Final community review (for minor updates only).
We encourage community members to share their ideas, priorities and suggestions via this form. Early feedback will help inform the initial drafting of the work plan.
We look forward to working with the community to shape priorities for the coming year.

@ctychung will give an update on the Kyoto 2026 CMIP workshop.
4. Technical presentation: Adjusting ESM restarts for new vegetation maps
@lachlanswhyborn from ACCESS-NRI will present on tools for creating land/atmosphere restart files which are valid when changing the model’s vegetation map. These tools were used to create ESM1.6 restart files which work with the new CMIP7 vegetation maps.

Applications now open for the ACCESS-NRI PhD Internship Program!
This 3-month internship provides an opportunity to work alongside ACCESS-NRI staff on activities related to the development, testing, and release of climate models as well as the supporting software and data that underpin them.
This is the first of two rounds this year and is open to PhD students from the Australian National University, UNSW, and the University of Tasmania. We expect to open a second internship round later in 2026 that will also include Monash University and the University of Melbourne.
This is a reminder that the next CM3 development and evaluation meeting will be held Tuesday 31 March 2026 at 10:30 AM AEDT.

Q2 experiments: 330KSU have been used out of the 2.00 MSU grant this quarter. If you have any experiments you would like to run, please add a proposal on the forum guidelines for how to do this. We encourage you to run experiments early in the quarter, as it helps with resource allocation. An additional 20MSU will be available to working groups and NRI work, and will be allocated on a first-come-first-serve basis.
gdata storage/g/data/lg87 has recently reached is 94 TB out of the 100 TB allocation. It would be much appreciated if you can clean up any no longer needed data as it will free up space for new experiments.
4. Science presentation: Flux corrections
@Dietmar_Dommenget will be giving a science presentation on his work on flux corrections in coupled models.
5. UK Met Office user license agreement
Members from ACCESS-NRI partner universities ANU, UNSW, UTas (including AAD), Monash Uni and UniMelb who run ACCESS-AM, ACCESS-CM, ACCESS-ESM, ACCESS-rAM, or ACCESS-rCM will need to read and accept the new Terms of Use for the Agreement by 8 May 2026 in order to continue to use and access UKMO software and licensed material.
6. ACCESS Community Workshop on Land and Coupled Modelling
The ACCESS Community Workshop on Land and Coupled Modelling will bring together the ESM and Land community working groups and will be held 31 August - 2 September in Melbourne. Abstract submission forms for the workshop will be out shortly.
