Experiment Proposal: Example - Last millennium SAM variability

This is an example of an experiment proposal to access ESM Working Group Resources as outlined in the guidelines.

Experiment title: Last millenium SAM variability

Using the last millennium ACCESS-ESM1.5 PMIP4 experiment as control for perturbation experiment to investigate sensitivity of the variability of the Southern Annular Mode.

Scientific justification:

Model: ACCESS-ESM-1.5
Configuration: GitHub - coecms/esm-pmip-last-mil
Initial conditions: restart from year 250: /g/data/path/to/restart/files
Run plan: 10 member ensemble of 100 model years
Total KSUs required: 10 x 100 x 1.1 KSU/yr = 1.1MSU
Time required: 10 parallel runs of 100 years @ 16 years/day = 7 days
Total storage required: 10 x 100 years @ 50Gb/year = 50TB

Result

Experiment conducted as described above from 24/5/2023 to 5/6/2023. There were some issues with model instability that required some runs to be restarted with slightly perturbed initial conditions, hence the time taken to run the experiment was longer than expected.
