Moving data to mass storage

Hi all,
I would like to move some of my g/data/ to long-term storage on tape. Unfortunately I never wrote down the commands on how to do this exactly. Does anyone have any tips on how to move the data to/from mass storage?

I believe a PDF with instructions on how to do this was going around a few months/years ago but I cannot find it. Thanks.
